The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und ‑prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. We perform research and testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to improve the safety of products and processes. At BAM we do research that matters. Our work covers a broad array of topics in the focus areas of energy, infrastructure, environment, materials, and chemistry and process engineering.

We are looking for talented people to join us.

Your responsibilities include:
  • You will develop and implement data models for internal and external stakeholders as part of the QI‑Digital project. Example use cases include additive manufacturing (e.g., optimizing production processes through advanced data models) and hydrogen infrastructure (e.g., ensuring data consistency in safety and operational systems)
  • You will design and implement data models for the efficient structuring and interoperability of data in Asset Administration Shells (AAS) and XML formats within data spaces. Experience with AAS and XML formats is desirable, but solid knowledge in data modeling and semantic technologies (e.g., ontologies, knowledge graphs) is required
  • You will work in interdisciplinary teams to integrate these data models into BAM's digital infrastructures and drive the digital transformation
  • You will develop, maintain, and optimize proof-of-concept infrastructures using DevOps practices (e.g., Docker, CI/CD pipelines) to improve deployment and operations
  • You will support the development and deployment of data models that enhance interoperability, data consistency, and system integration across various use cases and projects
  • You will evaluate and improve existing prototypes to provide innovative, scalable solutions for digital asset management and process optimization

Your qualifications:
  • Completed academic degree (diploma, master's) in a relevant field (computer science, business informatics, data engineering, technical software development, mathematics, physics, engineering), or a related discipline
  • Solid experience in data modeling and semantic technologies (e.g., knowledge graphs, ontologies) is required
  • Experience with Asset Administration Shell (AAS) and structured data formats is highly desirable
  • Experience with DevOps practices (e.g., Docker, CI/CD) and maintaining proof-of-concept infrastructures
  • Knowledge of digital manufacturing standards and industrial IoT applications is desirable
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python or Java and experience with tools for data modeling, analysis, and deployment
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work in interdisciplinary teams
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in German and English
  • Good communication and information behaviour, goal‑oriented and structured way of working, initiative/commitment, ability to work in a team and willingness to cooperate as well as conceptual, strategic and innovative thinking skills

We offer:
  • Interdisciplinary research at the interface to politics, business and society
  • Work in national and international networks with universities, research institutions and industrial companies
  • Attractive and modern working environment with excellent infrastructure and state-of-the-art scientific equipment
  • Good work-life balance, possibility of mobile work (up to 60%), flexible working hours, 30 days of vacation and up to 12 days of compensatory time off per year
