Applications are invited for a post doctoral research assistant in Sustainable Consumption within the Birmingham Business School, University of Birmingham. The successful candidate will have a PhD in Marketing or Psychology (or related disciplines that are relevant to the project) and will work with Dr Diana Gregory-Smith (Department of Marketing) and Dr Vivek Soundararajan (Department of International Business and Strategy) on a project funded by Procter and Gamble (P&G). The project will involve systematic analysis of the extant literature on factors influencing consumer behaviour towards sustainable products, with a particular focus on sustainable every day generic consumer products, and personal/household care.

We are looking for a highly motivated and driven post doctoral researcher with both advanced quantitative and qualitative research skills that will in used in year 1 to carry out a meta-analysis based on the reviewed literature and run a mixed-methods data collection as part of a pilot study. These activities are expected to inform the development of high quality research publications and practitioner-relevant publications by the post doctoral researcher along with the academic team. The appointee will also be required to take part and initiate various engagement and dissemination activities, including meetings and workshops with P&G representatives that will consider the research findings implications for P&G sustainable product development and promotional decisions. Throughout the project stages, the postdoc is expected to explore external funding sources and contribute to the development of applications targeting external funding bodies. Following funding availability and satisfactory performance, the research contract may be extended for another year, during which the research assistant is expected to refine the research design and collect large qualitative and quantitative datasets (in year 2). The successful candidate will work closely both with the academic team and P&G representatives and is expected to travel within the UK and to the US to meet P&G staff in connection to the project and building an impact case study.

Main Duties / Responsibilities

  • Develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research, with assistance of a mentor if required
  • Contribute to writing bids for research funding
  • Analyse and interpret data
  • Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding
  • Disseminate research findings for publication, research seminars etc
  • Supervise students on research related work and provide guidance to PhD students where appropriate to the discipline
  • Contribute to developing new models, techniques and methods
  • Undertake management/administration arising from research
  • Contribute to Departmental/School research-related activities and research-related administration
  • Contribute to enterprise, business development and/or public engagement activities of manifest benefit to the College and the University, often under supervision of a project leader
  • Collect research data; this may be through a variety of research methods, such as scientific experimentation, literature reviews, and research interviews *
  • Present research outputs, including drafting academic publications or parts thereof, for example at seminars and as posters *
  • Provide guidance, as required, to support staff and any students who may be assisting with the research *
  • Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines*

Person Specification

  • First degree in area of specialism and normally, a higher degree relevant to research area or equivalent qualifications
  • High level analytical capability
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly
  • Fluency in relevant models, techniques or methods and ability to contribute to developing new ones
  • Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
  • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
  • Contribute to the planning and organising of the research programme and/or specific research project
  • Co-ordinate own work with others to avoid conflict or duplication of effort
