Senior Lecturer / Lecturer – Centre for Higher Education Research, Teaching & Learning (CHERTL) 2 x posts (1 Senior Lecturer level and 1 Lecturer level)

Recognising that diversity is important in achieving excellence, Rhodes University especially encourages South African members of underrepresented designated groups to apply. Spouses and partners of existing staff members are also encouraged to apply.

Please note that this appointment will be made in line with the requirements of the Employment Equity Act of RSA and the University’s recruitment and selection policies and equity strategies. The initial focus will be on equity candidates.

In terms of Immigration Legislation (Act No. 13 of 2002 & Regulations), international staff members (non-SA citizens) have to comply with the provisions of the Act. This therefore means that the period of employment to non-SA citizens will be guided by the validity period of the work permit.  In line with legislation governing employment of foreign nationals, employment contracts will be offered on the basis that a development plan would be implemented for the transfer of skills to a South African resident. The onus is on candidates to ensure that they are in possession of a valid work permit before the commencement of employment at the University, failing which the employment with Rhodes University will be terminated.

The Centre for Higher Education Research, Teaching and Learning at Rhodes University has developed a national reputation for academic staff development. Its well-theorised and innovative approaches to formal higher education studies and short courses are highly regarded and its research output provides a significant contribution to the sector.

CHERTL is seeking to recruit two new staff members – one at the Lecturer level and the other at the level of Senior Lecturer - to contribute to the exciting work we do.

The main roles of Higher Education Development Practitioners at Rhodes University are to develop and support academics in their roles as educators at tertiary level. The support and development are provided by:

  • Teaching on formal courses intended to enhance teaching and learning (not only at Rhodes University, but also across the higher education sector)
  • Providing consultancy on issues relating to teaching and learning and
  • Supporting academics as they meet the requirements related to the enhancement and assurance of quality (for example, through student feedback)

In addition, incumbents will be expected to contribute to the development of the field of Higher Education Studies through their own research and by providing supervision.

Appointment at lecturer level would require the incumbent to supervise at least at master’s level. At the senior lecturer level, the requirement is to supervise at and doctoral level and taking on more leadership and co-ordination roles in CHERTL.
