Die Desmond Tutu TB Sentrum (DTTS) is in die Departement Pediatrie en Kindergesondheid aan die Universiteit Stellenbosch (US) gesetel. Die DTTS verrig al meer as 'n dekade baanbrekernavorsing as 'n wêreldleier op die gebied van pediatriese tuberkulose (TB) en verwante uitdagings vir openbare gesondheid, onder meer MIV. Die DTTS het ook kernvaardighede in die sosiale wetenskappe opgebou. Die eenheid vir sosiale wetenskappe het tans 30 personeellede, waarvan 20 nagraadse navorsers is wat uit vakrigtings soos sielkunde, sosiologie, sosiale antropologie, openbare gesondheid en ontwikkelingstudies kom. Hierdie multidissiplinêre span werf tans persone om die kapasiteit vir gemengdemetode-navorsing in die sosiale wetenskappe uit te brei. Die aangestelde persone se vernaamste take sal wees om kwalitatiewe data in te samel en te ontleed, en om akademiese skryfwerk te lewer en befondsingsaansoeke vir voorlegging op te stel.

The Desmond Tutu TB Centre (DTTC) is located in the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health at Stellenbosch University (SU). For over a decade, the DTTC has been conducting cutting edge, world-leading research on paediatric tuberculosis (TB) and associated public health challenges, including HIV. The DTTC has also nurtured core competencies in the social sciences. The social science unit currently employs over 30 people, including 20 postgraduate researchers from disciplines such as psychology, sociology, social anthropology, public health, and development studies. This multidisciplinary team is looking to recruit additional capacity for mixed-method social science projects. The appointees' primary responsibilities will be to process and analyse qualitative data and to do academic writing and compile funding proposals for submission.

  • Bestuur die implementering van ontledingsprotokolle.

  • Verseker dat sosiaal-wetenskaplike oogmerke deurgevoer word ooreenkomstig die protokolle, prosedures en tydraamwerke waarop ooreengekom is.
  • Verseker dat etiese vereistes nagekom word.
  • Dra by tot verslae aan skenkers en ander belanghebbendes.
  • Verrig enige ander taak op versoek van die lynbestuur.

  • Head the implementation of analysis protocols.
  • Draft manuscript sections for publication of results.
  • Contribute to grant applications for funding.
  • Contribute to data processing (capturing, transcription and translation) for analysis.
  • Work with other members of the social science team to build the DTTC's social science agenda.
  • Ensure that the social science agenda be implemented according to the agreed procedures and timeframes.
  • Ensure that ethical requirements be fulfilled.
  • Contribute to reports for donors and other stakeholders.
  • Perform any other duty required by line management.

  • 'n Meestersgraad in sielkunde, sosiologie, antropologie of 'n verwante vakgebied.
  • Vyf jaar werkservaring in 'n omgewing waar MIV/vigs-navorsing verrig is.
  • Ervaring van navorsingsontleding.
  • Lysting as mede-outeur in een of meer eweknie-beoordeelde publikasies.
  • Duidelike vordering met PhD-studies oor 'n onderwerp wat vir die DTTS se navorsingsoogmerke tersaaklik is.
  • Ervaring daarvan om toesig te hou oor personeel wat op intreevlak is of veldwerk doen.
  • Ervaring daarvan om navorsing onder landelike gemeenskappe te doen.
  • Ervaring daarvan om navorsingsuitsette by akademiese forums aan te bied.
  • Deeglike, aantoonbare onderlegdheid in 'n verskeidenheid navorsingsmetodes.
  • Goeie interpersoonlike vaardighede en ervaring daarvan om saam met 'n multidissiplinêre span sosiaal-wetenskaplikes te werk.
  • Uitstekende geskrewe kommunikasievaardighede en ervaring van verslagskrywing.
  • 'n Doelgerigte ingesteldheid en die vaardighede om probleme onafhanklik en doeltreffend op te los.
  • Rekenaarvaardigheid (MS Word, PowerPoint en Excel).
  • Die vermoë om Afrikaans of Xhosa - of albei - te praat, lees en skryf.
  • Die vermoë om Engels vlot te praat, lees en skryf.

 

  • A master's degree in psychology, sociology, anthropology or a cognate discipline.
  • Five years' postgraduate work experience in an HIV/TB research environment.
  • Experience analysing research.
  • Co-authorship of one or more peer-reviewed manuscripts.
  • Clear progression towards a PhD on a topic relevant to the DTTC's research agenda.
  • Experience supervising entry-level or field staff.
  • Experience conducting research in rural communities.
  • Experience presenting research outputs in academic fora.
  • A solid, demonstrable grounding in a range of research methods.
  • Sound interpersonal skills and experience working in a multidisciplinary team of social scientists.
  • Excellent written communication skills and experience writing reports.
  • A goal-oriented disposition and the skills to solve problems independently and effectively.
  • Computer literacy (MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel).
  • The ability to speak, read and write Xhosa or Afrikaans, or both.
  • The ability to speak, read and write English fluently.
