Job Details

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Fostering collaborative research by applying the One Health approach to address complex health-related problems including zoonoses and transboundary diseases that arise at the interfaces between human and animal populations, and the ecosystems in which they co-exist;
  • Participating in teaching and learning of undergraduate and postgraduate veterinary and veterinary nursing students in the concepts of One Health;
  • Publication of research findings in peer reviewed  international journals;
  • Participating in departmental and faculty administrative and other duties as delegated by the Head of the Department;
  • Rendering community and other service to farmers, the veterinary profession, industry and other clients as required;
  • Participating in self-development activities as outlined by the Head of the Department;
  • Co-ordinate and supervise field-based projects.

 

Minimum Requirements:

Lecturer:

For candidate with a veterinary qualification:

  • A BVSc- or BVMCh-degree or an equivalent veterinary qualification;
  • A Master's or equivalent postgraduate degree at the time of appointment or registered  for an MSc to be completed within two years of appointment;
  • Competence Specific Registration with the SAVC as a specialist in a discipline relevant to farm animal health or eligibility for registration at the time of appointment with commitment to obtain registration within one year of appointment;
  • At least two years' experience in the management of large data sets, as well as population and descriptive data analyses;
  • Experience in the management and co-ordination of field teams (i.e. implementation and monitoring in a rural setting, team management training and control, budget management, and communication with national veterinary and local authorities);
  • Demonstrable interest in research;
  • Evidence of continued professional development or continued education development;
  • Participation in extracurricular academic activities or events;
  • Commitment to develop a teaching and learning portfolio required at the lecturer level;
  • Demonstrate strong potential to become an established specialist researcher.

 

For candidates without a veterinary qualification:

  • An appropriate Master's degree;
  • At least two years' experience in the management of large data sets, as well as population and descriptive data analyses;
  • Experience in the management and co-ordination of field teams (i.e. implementation and monitoring in a rural setting, team management training and control, budget management, and communication with national veterinary and local authorities);
  • Demonstrable interest in research;
  • Evidence of continued professional development or continued education development;
  • Participation in extracurricular academic activities or events;
  • Commitment to develop a teaching and learning portfolio required at the lecturer level;
  • Demonstrate strong potential to become an established specialist researcher.

 

Senior Lecturer:

For candidates with a veterinary qualification:

  • A BVSc- or BVMCh-degree or an equivalent veterinary qualification;
  • An appropriate Master's degree in veterinary science or in a related field, and commitment to register for a PhD;
  • Registration (or registrable) as a Veterinarian with SAVC;
  • Evidence of teaching experience at a professional or tertiary level on the topics of Public Health and Epidemiology, Infectious Diseases and Zoonoses and appropriate clinical expertise that can be supported by relevant peer reviews;
  • At least two peer reviewed papers in an ISI accredited scientific journals as first or senior author during the last five years plus 3 - 5 subject or research publications;
  • Evidence in sourcing or obtaining research funds;
  • Evidence of successful post graduate supervision;
  • Evidence of community engagement;
  • Evidence of participation in relevant academic or professional organisations/bodies;
  • Evidence of administrative experience or participation in academic administrative activities;
  • Presentation at scientific and/or professional congresses at national and/or international level;
  • Commitment to develop a teaching and learning portfolio required at the Senior Lecturer level;
  • Demonstrate strong potential to become an established specialist researcher in an academic environment.

 

For candidates without a veterinary qualification:

  • An appropriate PhD degree;
  • At least two years' teaching experience at tertiary level on the topics of Public Health and Epidemiology, Infectious Diseases and Zoonoses;
  • Commitment to develop a teaching and learning portfolio required at the Senior Lecturer level;
  • At least 3 - 5 publications in high impact journals over the past five years as first or senior author;
  • Evidence in sourcing or obtaining research funds;
  • Evidence of successful post graduate supervision;
  • Evidence of community engagement;
  • Evidence of participation in relevant academic or professional organisations/bodies;
  • Evidence of administrative experience or participation in academic administrative activities;
  • Presentation at scientific and/or professional congresses at national and/or international level;
  • Demonstrate strong potential to become an established specialist researcher in an academic environment.

 

Required Competencies (Skills, Knowledge and Behavioural Attributes):

  • Competence in basic epidemiology, research project design and data analysis;
  • Skills in disease investigation and health management interventions;
  • Research interest appropriate to the position;
  • Good language and communication skills (written and verbal comprehension and verbal expression);
  • Generic teaching competence such as communication and presentation, word-processing, spreadsheets and social networking skills.

 

Added Advantages and Preferences:

Lecturer:

For candidate with a veterinary qualification:

  • Evidence of applicable teaching experience;
  • At least one peer reviewed paper in an ISI accredited scientific journal.

 

For candidates without a veterinary qualification:

  • Evidence of applicable teaching experience;
  • At least two peer reviewed papers in an ISI accredited scientific journal.

 

For both Lecturer and Senior Lecturer levels:

  • Clinical experience and proficiency with farm animals and in wildlife.

 

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
