The South African Centre for Epidemiological Modelling & Analysis (SACEMA) is a national research centre established under the Centre of Excellence programme of the Department of Science and Technology and the National Research Foundation, and based at Stellenbosch University in Stellenbosch, South Africa. SACEMA specialises in model-based analysis to improve health in South Africa and across the African continent

Trained in mathematics, biology, physics, economics, statistics, and epidemiology, our researchers bridge disciplines to understand disease dynamics and improve real-world outcomes. SACEMA is hiring a Researcher / National Public Health Liaison, reporting to the Director: SACEMA. The ideal candidate would have a PhD in a relevant discipline, substantial experience in applied epidemiological modelling, and exceptional communication skills. Salary support will be provided from the SACEMA core grant and other external funds. The position will be based  at the SACEMA offices in Stellenbosch and frequent travel may be required (up to 25%).



  • Maintaining and developing the relationship between SACEMA and South African public health stakeholders;
  • Identifying and developing opportunities for research collaborations, service delivery, and capacity building activities that will improve public health in South Africa;
  • Identifying and coordinating opportunities for SACEMA to provide technical expertise relevant to arising public health matters of national importance and public health decision-making;
  • Developing and effectively managing collaborative research projects, working closely with Director: SACEMA, including negotiation of the scope and timing of potential work with relevant stakeholders;
  • Providing regular updates to the Director on ongoing work and upcoming stakeholder needs;
  • Planning research workshops and meetings of technical experts on an as-needed basis;
  • Publishing research findings in peer-reviewed journals;
  • Leading and/or collaborating on grant proposals to support the above-mentioned research programme and activities;
  • Contributing to SACEMA's training workshops and short courses, on an as-needed basis;
  • Supervising postgraduate students (initially at the Honours or Masters level);
  • Contributing positively to the SACEMA community through service and regular engagement with students, other researchers, and support staff;
  • Promoting the reputation of SACEMA and Stellenbosch University through positive engagement of national stakeholders and publication of high-quality, relevant research.


Job Requirements

  • PhD in Epidemiology, Mathematical Epidemiology, or other relevant quantitative discipline, OR a Master's degree with a substantial and relevant research portfolio, as demonstrated by publications and active collaborations;
  • A good academic record during postgraduate studies, as evidenced by the University transcript and academic references;
  • Familiarity with the South African public health and higher education landscapes;
  • Published research in recognised, peer-reviewed journals;
  • Excellent knowledge of the variety of uses of mathematical modelling in public health;
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly acquire new skills and work in a collaborative environment;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English;
  • Fluency in word processing and data management skills.



  • PhD in Epidemiology, Mathematical Epidemiology, or other relevant quantitative discipline,
  • Postdoctoral experience (i.e., post PhD or post MD training);
  • A record of successful collaboration with researchers at other institutions within South Africa and other institutions;
  • Experience in mentoring and/or co-supervising students;
  • Project management experience;
  • Comprehensive knowledge of and experience with Human Subjects Research ethics review processes;
  • Experience interacting with government bodies, foundations, funders, or other external institutions of potential benefit to the research agenda at SACEMA;
  • Familiarity with the broad range of disciplines encompassed by SACEMA's research, including infectious disease epidemiology, public health, disease ecology, mathematics, and statistics;
  • Experience teaching technical skills such as scientific computing or scientific writing.
