The Department seeks a veterinarian to join our dynamic team tasked with enhancing animal production and welfare, community and environmental health. This person will focus on clinical teaching and research in fields related to the health of domestic livestock species kept for production (cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, camelids, ratites).


The successful candidate will actively participate in the following areas:
  • Teaching and practical training of undergraduate and postgraduate veterinary and veterinary nursing students in medicine, surgery and/or herd/flock health and management of production animal species;
  • Clinical service in the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital, surrounding community and satellite clinics, including participation in a 24-hour service;
  • Postgraduate training and supervision where appropriate;
  • Research and publication in scientific journals;
  • Networking with relevant industry stakeholders;
  • Community engagement;
  • Administrative and other duties as delegated by the Head of Department;
  • Academic self-development.


  1. A BVSc or BVMCh degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
  2. Must be registered and willing to complete MMedVet degree within three years;
  3. Registration with the SAVC as a Veterinarian;
  4. Three years' veterinary experience in predominantly ruminant practice;
  5. Evidence of continued professional development or continued education development;
  6. Participation in extracurricular academic activities or events;
  7. Commitment to develop a teaching and learning portfolio required at lecturer level;
  8. Demonstrate strong potential to become an established researcher.

Senior Lecturer:
  1. An MMedVet degree and/or equivalent speciality board certification;
  2. Registration with the SAVC as a specialist in the relevant field or eligibility for registration within a reasonable period;
  3. Five years veterinary experience in predominantly ruminant practice;
  4. Evidence of continued professional development or continued education development;
  5. Participation in extracurricular academic activities or events;
  6. Commitment to develop a teaching and learning portfolio required at the senior lecturer level;
  7. Demonstrate strong potential to become an established researcher;
  8. At least one recent full peer reviewed papers in ISI accredited scientific journals as first or senior author.

  1. Proven knowledge and competence in veterinary clinical work;
  2. Skills in herd or population level problem investigation, management interventions and consultation;
  3. Research interest appropriate to the position;
  4. Good language and communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills;
  5. Generic teaching competence including proficiency with presentation, word-processing and spreadsheet software.

  • Experience with relevant specialised procedures, techniques and tools, e.g. hoof treatment in dairy cattle;
  • Tertiary teaching and mentoring experience;
  • Exposure to research in an appropriate field with at least two peer reviewed publications.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
