RESPONSIBILITIES:

The position plays a strategic role in overseeing the Faculty brand and marketing strategy, as well as communication campaigns, media relations, events and web refresh, and ensures that the strategies are effectively implemented across all faculty departments and to align with the University's overall institutional strategy.

The successful candidate will be responsible for:
  • Compiling a comprehensive marketing and public relations plan, in conjunction and consultation with the Dean, in line with the Faculty plan and the University's brand and marketing strategy;
  • Developing a communications strategy that will promote the Faculty and its reputation;
  • Proactively keeping abreast of assigned clients' marketing and media plans, and providing technological solutions including rich media, site optimisation, promotional ideas, mobile, social networks, viral, etc;
  • Managing the contact database and assisting with lead generation and communication activities;
  • Performing function and events management as required by the different Schools and Faculty;
  • Planning functions and events;
  • Developing strong, trusting relationships between clients and partners, providing leadership and support to the Faculty.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Degree in Marketing Management, Communication Management/Public Relations/Journalism or a related field;
  • Five years' experience in marketing, communication and public relations of which three years should include stakeholder engagement and management experience.


REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
  • Interpersonal skills and the ability and sophistication needed to interact with internal stakeholders, business, media and other external stakeholders;
  • Excellent language and communication skills and exceptional writing skills;
  • Innovative, creative and proactive;
  • Attention to detail;
  • Ability to meet demanding targets within tight deadlines;
  • Administrative and accounting skills;
  • Organisational ability;
  • Ability to work on own initiative and as member of a team;
  • Able and willing to work, on occasions, evenings and weekends;
  • Computer skills: MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel.


ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
  • Relevant postgraduate courses, degree and/or other related media training;
  • Previous relevant experience in a higher education environment;
  • Registration with a professional body, e.g. Marketing Association of South Africa, Digital Media and Marketing Association and Public Relations Institute of Southern Africa;

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
