Job Purpose

This post will report to the College Digital Marketing and Communications Manager and will work closely with the wider Marketing and Communications team, Institutes and Schools in the College of Medical and Dental Sciences at the University of Birmingham.

The post will provide web editing, maintenance and wider digital content development support to a number of areas within the College, including balancing their time between working on proactive web projects, responding to requests for website updates and general communications activities.

It will also provide communications support, working with a range of staff across the College to identify and draft news stories, and using communications channels, digital and other, for promotion.

This post will reside in the College of Medical and Dental Sciences Marketing and Communications team receiving professional line management, training and steer from the College Digital Marketing and Communications Manager in order to deliver on College level strategic priorities and plans.

Person Specification
  • Educated to GCSE or equivalent relevant experience with a minimum of GCSE grade C or above in Maths and English
  • Computer literate with an understanding of web content, including structure and navigation
  • Experience of using web content management systems to an intermediate or advanced level
  • Experience of working independently to develop online communications and writing/editing corporate websites for large organisations, preferably in higher education
  • Experience of using social media in a business environment
  • Strong copy writing skills with experience of drafting news articles for production online
  • Experience of producing newsletters and other communications to a high standard
  • Experience of working in a busy and demanding customer driven environment
  • Able to independently communicate to and support senior staff
  • Professional with a friendly, approachable attitude
  • Able to use own initiative and prioritise work tasks while working with conflicting demands
  • Able to organise and manage a busy workload and work with minimal supervision with a willingness to resolve situations, as well as knowing when to refer issues to others
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and oral
  • Good team worker with the ability to work effectively with staff at different levels of the organisation
  • Excellent attention to detail, with a high level of grammar and spelling
  • Experience in, and the ability to follow, website policies and processes, producing clear and engaging content that adheres to best practice
  • Sound knowledge of digital channels and, in particular, an understanding of how to choose the most appropriate channel for the task
  • Experience of co-ordinating of video production is desirable
  • Knowledge of and enforcing quality and standards
  • Abel to adopt a positive attitude towards the development of new processes
  • Willing to work as part of a team and provide support to colleagues
