Job Details

A full-time Research Associate position has is available for three years for a project funded by the Leverhulme Foundation which explores the psychology of bilingualism. Being able to speak multiple languages conveys considerable economic, societal and cultural benefits. However, via the constant mind/brain training involved in maintaining multiple languages, bilingualism may also convey to the individual significant advantages in setting and maintaining goals, as well as switching between various goals and activities (cognitive control). Whether such an advantage for bilinguals over monolinguals is genuine is currently highly controversial. In this project, we aim to advance and potentially resolve the issue via experimental studies which dynamically track an individual's responses to particular tasks which require cognitive control, and we will explore a variety of different aspects of cognitive control.

The candidate for the research associate post will manage the day-to-day work on the project (design of experiments, participant recruitment, data collection, data analysis, and interpretation). Assistance in dissemination of the results (such as conference presentations and manuscript writing) is not required but will be encouraged. This post would suit a well-qualified researcher with a BSc in psychology or a related discipline. Prior experience in experimental research, and a broad understanding of the psychology of language would be highly desirable.

Applications should include curriculum vitae as well as a brief description of research interests. For informal enquiries please contact Markus Damian, m.damian@bristol.ac.uk .

We appreciate and value difference, seeking to attract, develop and retain a diverse mix of talented people that will contribute to the overall success of Bristol and help maintain our position as one of the world's leading universities.
