Job description

You will be part of an innovative and dynamic clinical psychology team and contribute to postgraduate and undergraduate teaching.

The Clinical Psychology Doctoral Programme team at the University of Southampton is committed to the scientist-practitioner model, is firmly rooted in the core values of the NHS Constitution and has over 30 years' experience in clinical training in partnership with our local NHS Trusts and related organisations. A key part of the role is to support learning in practice. Two different employment pathways are available: education-led or balanced across research and education. Clinical psychologists with expertise in teaching clinical skills and the aspiration to develop their research can apply to work on an education pathway. This will provide an opportunity to build a research portfolio that complements current research activity in the school. Alternatively, applicants with a growing national/international research track record, evidenced by publications/grant applications, can apply to work on a balanced pathway (see Person Specification for details).

Our School has expertise in developmental and applied psychopathology, psychological interventions across the lifespan and affective neuroscience. The School of Psychology at Southampton is recognised for producing world-leading, high-impact research, supported by excellent research facilities (REF2014). These include purpose-built laboratories for neuropsychological/cognitive testing, social interaction and behavioural observation, therapeutic intervention, child/family studies, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), electroencephalography (EEG), neurostimulation (TMS/tDCS), psychophysiology, eye-tracking, virtual reality, and psychopharmacology.

Our School is one of the largest providers of postgraduate research training in the UK, offering a range of MSc programmes (Clinical, Health, Research Methods), research doctorates (PhD), Doctoral Programmes in Clinical Psychology (DClin) and Educational Psychology (DEdPsy), and training in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).

We enjoy long-standing collaborations with University research groups in Medicine (Psychiatry), Biological Sciences (Neuroscience), Health Sciences and Education. The Southampton Neuroscience Group and Institute for Life Sciences support further cross-disciplinary collaboration. Our strategic partnerships with NHS Trusts, schools, Government, charities and industry deliver world leading impact (REF2014) and attract significant grant income from all major research funders. The University of Southampton is one of the UK's leading research-intensive universities.

Psychology is an ambitious and successful School, ranked in the Global Top 100 (QS, 2019), as well as a friendly and positive place to work. You will join a highly collegiate and professional team who are keen to share expertise, provide mentorship, and support professional development. The School values diversity and equality. It recognises that employees may wish to have working patterns that fit with their caring responsibilities or work-life balance. Due consideration will be given to applicants who have had career breaks for reasons including maternity, paternity or adoption leave, disability or illness. The University of Southampton holds an Athena SWAN Silver Award demonstrating commitment to equal opportunities and gender balance in the workplace.
