Job Details
The Faculty of Arts at The University of Auckland seeks applications for an early career scholar and teacher in the newly established Bachelor of Global Studies programme. This position is expected to be appointed at the level of Lecturer and to begin during 2019.
About the role
The Bachelor of Global Studies programme is a university-wide initiative led by the Faculty of Arts with specializations that embrace courses in the faculties of Business and Economics, Creative Arts and Industries, Engineering, Law, and Science. Many students are attracted by the opportunity to include the BGlobalSt in a wide range of conjoint (double) degrees - the most popular combinations are with Law, Business and Arts but other combinations include Engineering, Music, Design and Health Studies.
The Bachelor of Global Studies (BGlobalSt) at The University of Auckland is the first and only programme of its kind in New Zealand. The programme's four majors prioritise the development of engaged global citizens, whose studies are inherently transdisciplinary and issues-based. Language and area study are required for all students. The programme actively encourages overseas study and exchange. A Master's of Global Studies is planned for the near future.

The Global Studies programme has been internationally bench-marked; it has ongoing input and support from the government, business, and the not-for-profit sector. Enrolments are rapidly increasing and there is also a growing interest from international students.
The Global Studies programme is hosted by the Faculty of Arts and overseen by a Programme Director who reports directly to the Dean of the Faculty. A Deputy Director provides academic and leadership support. The new appointee will work closely with the Programme Director and will be expected to contribute to the development and delivery of Global Studies teaching.
Skills and experience
It is expected that the new appointee will be located in one of the four Schools of the Faculty of Arts: Social Sciences; Humanities; Cultures, Languages, and Linguistics; or Maori Studies and Pacific Studies. The successful candidate will be part of the growing Global Studies team and will be expected to work collaboratively to develop future directions of the programme.
The University seeks applicants who have demonstrated broad interdisciplinary interests in pressing global issues and who are interested in engaging with local manifestations of these issues, including the Faculty's commitment to the Treaty of Waitangi and Vision Mātauranga (Māori perspectives on knowledge and learning).
The ideal candidate will have competence in comparative area studies, proficiency in mixed-method research approaches, with a developing international publication record. A focus on the Asia-Pacific region/ Pacific Rim is desirable and applications from those with a specialty in Latin America are particularly encouraged. Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate familiarity with or interest in international experiential learning initiatives and competence in an additional language.
