Job Details

The University of Basel is the oldest university in Switzerland, with about 13'000 students and 4'300 researchers in 7 faculties covering a wide spectrum of disciplines from humanities to natural sciences. sciCORE is the center for scientific computing at the University of Basel, and is also a node in a national infrastructure network coordinated by the SIB Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics . We support scientists on matters of data management, analysis and storage by providing efficient high-performance computing as well as consulting and training.

We are now looking for a Bioinformatics Training and Support Specialist. The activities of the successful candidate will be split between the SIB Training Group, to develop and provide bioinformatics training, and the sciCORE team, to contribute to research support services. The position is available immediately.

Your profile

Our ideal candidate has a PhD degree in bioinformatics, computational biology or a related subject, and enthusiasm for training. Some postdoctoral experience and a track record in teaching and/or outreach and training, at a university or elsewhere, are a plus.

The content of the training courses to be developed and offered can be adapted to the background of the candidate, however we are particularly interested in expertise in the broad areas of genomics and protein bioinformatics. A solid grasp of statistics and proficiency in at least one programming language are required. The primary working languages will be R and Python.

Experience in high-performance computing would be an asset. Given the service-oriented nature of the position, we expect our candidate to be flexible, proactive, capable of following several projects in parallel, and to have a curiosity for natural sciences in general. We are looking for candidates who are adaptable and able to grow into advanced topics.

We offer you

The position will be fully hosted at sciCORE in Basel. You will be part of a highly efficient and motivated team of data analysts, data managers and scientific IT specialists. Collaborations and co-authorship in publications can be expected. As a member of the SIB Training Group you will join forces with a dynamic and enthusiastic group of bioinformatics experts embedded in diverse Swiss research institutions. Training activities will be focused in the Basel and surrounding area, however there will be opportunities to teach across Switzerland. We support our team members in their own training, networking and career development.
