The Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) is a world-leading institution dedicated to improv-ing global health through excellence in research, education and services. Swiss TPH is an associated institute of the University of Basel and employs about 850 staff and students from more than 80 nations.
The Department of Medical Parasitology and Infection Biology of Swiss TPH conducts basic and translational research in infection biology with a particular focus on poverty-related infectious diseases. Within the MPI Department the Malaria Gene Regulation Lab of Till Voss studies the epigenetic mechanisms that regulate antigenic variation and gametocyte conversion in the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum.
Your position
This PhD position is part of a research project on antigenic variation funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. In this project, we want to elucidate the regulatory mechanisms controlling mutually exclusive var gene transcription using CRISPR/Cas9-based gene editing approaches.

Your profile
- MSc degree in the molecular life sciences
- Skills in molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, cell culture
- Experience in basic malaria research is beneficial but not mandatory
- Excellent communication and documentation skills in written and spoken English
- Ability to work independently and as part of a research team
