Job Details

An opportunity now exists for a statistician to join a friendly team at the Medical Research Council Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit (LEU) in Southampton (under the directorship of Professor Cyrus Cooper). The LEU aims to understand the environmental causes of diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis, and to develop strategies to prevent these disorders. The current research areas are grouped into six themes namely (1) Lifecourse determinants of bone and joint disease (2) Sarcopenia, frailty and clinical practice in older people, (3) Development, body composition and health, (4) Nutrition, development and lifelong health in transitioning populations, (5) Integrative Biology and (6) Work and health. Collaborative projects exist across these programmes and also with a range of external collaborators. The postholder would be expected to work mainly in programme 5, with some work in programmes 1 and 3. The postholder will participate fully in the analyses relating to the NiPPeR Trial. This trial involves a nutritional intervention designed to maintain healthy blood glucose levels during pregnancy which is given to women both before conception and during pregnancy to improve the health of their children.

The successful applicant will have a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in statistics or another relevant discipline (recent Masters graduates welcome). You will be involved with the analysis of large and complex datasets using appropriate statistical techniques. Experience with Stata, SPSS or R would be desirable but not essential.

This is a full or part-time position for one year in the first instance on a fixed term basis, extendable dependent on funding. Salary will be in the range of £30,395 - £37,345 per annum dependent on qualifications and experience.
