Job Details

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to lead experimental work on a Leverhulme Trust funded project exploring how salience in prey determines predator targeting behaviour. The candidate will design and run behavioural experiments using fish attacking virtual and real prey items (see, for example, our previous work published in Science : www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnBv76VQzNk ). There will also be fieldwork carried out in Trinidad, filming shoals of fish (guppies) from rivers varying in predation risk.

The overall project is lead by Dr. Colin Tosh at the University of Newcastle although the successful candidate will be based at the University of Bristol in the Ioannou research group ( www.ioannougroup.com ). The experimental work at Bristol will be designed and analysed in close collaboration with the project lead and RA who will lead on the modelling aspect of the project, thus the ability to work as part of a team is essential. The successful candidate will have a demonstrable academic interest and strong background in experimental animal behaviour, behavioural ecology or animal cognition research. Previous experience working with fish is desirable but not essential.

Training will be provided in behavioural experimentation, simulation modelling and data analysis, but prior experience would be a definite advantage. Proven experience in managing independent laboratory and fieldwork, and a strong commitment to a research career would also be highly desirable, as would a strong background in animal behaviour and/or animal cognition research.

A copy of the original proposal to the Leverhulme Trust is available on request. For informal enquiries please email Dr Christos Ioannou at C.C.Ioannou@bristol.ac.uk

We appreciate and value difference, seeking to attract, develop and retain a diverse mix of talented people that will contribute to the overall success of Bristol and help maintain our position as one of the world's leading universities.
