The Department of Library Services is looking for dynamic leader to lead and co-ordinate the Faculty Library of Law in a strategic, innovative and dynamic manner so as to enable the team to:
  • Provide for the information needs of the Faculty and strategic partners;
  • Fulfil the mission and vision of UP and the Department of Library Services (DLS);
  • Align with the priorities of UP, the Faculty and DLS;
  • Understand the changing needs of the Faculty.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

The incumbent will be responsible for:
  • Information supply to all departments/centres/units in the Faculty;
  • Providing and evaluating information resources that support teaching, learning and research;
  • Providing training and supporting staff and students in the use of information resources;
  • Ensuring on-going liaison and co-ordination with academic staff;
  • Providing consultation service and advice to the Faculty regarding assignments and research projects;
  • Physical resources and technology management;
  • Managing and developing staff.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • A four-year library degree (eg. B.Bibl, PG Dip.LIS or B.Inf Hons); OR
  • A three-year library degree (eg. BIS) and one year of experience in an academic/research library; AND
  • An honours degree in Library and/or Information Science OR a relevant honours qualification or MTech-degree;
  • 10 years' working experience in an academic library, of which seven years was as an information specialist;
  • Experience in the use and impact of information technology;
  • Proven experience in managing teams.


REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
  • Expert knowledge of the subject and work environment of the primary users;
  • Knowledge of the research process;
  • Expert knowledge of relevant information resources;
  • The ability to organise information and make it available to the community;
  • Knowledge of marketing of DLS services and products;
  • The ability to identify training needs and provide relevant training;
  • Ability to benchmark services and products;
  • Knowledge of legal requirements with regards to information distribution and information media;
  • Expert knowledge of training and evaluation methods;
  • Creativity, innovation and adaptability;
  • Client focussed;
  • Emotional intelligence.


ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
  • A master's degree;
  • Subject related qualifications.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
