Junior Lecturer in Plant Breeding

NewGeneration of Academics' Programme (nGAP)

The position is part of the nGAP initiative of the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and comes with substantial support from the DHET.

The appointment is also subject to the conditions as set by the DHET and must be read in conjunction with the nGAP requirements of the DHET.

Duties
  • Duties will be assigned in accordance with the phasing-in requirements of the nGAP initiative;
  • Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in Genetics;
  • Developing and evaluating course material in Genetics;
  • Providing academic guidance to postgraduate students;
  • Participating in molecular plant genetics/genomics research projects;
  • Continuously publishing research results in accredited, peer-reviewed journals as well as presenting conference papers;
  • Developing national and international research and industry partnerships and networks;
  • Rendering a service to the research environment, Department, Faculty and University, as well as relevant industries.

Requirements
  • MSc degree in Plant Breeding or Genetics;
  • At least two years' post-MSc experience;
  • Proven organisational capacity, as well as administrative and technical skill in a laboratory environment;
  • Capacity to work independently as well as part of a group;
  • Good verbal and written communication skills;
  • Proven experience in at least one of the following two research fields:
  • MSc degree in Plant Breeding or Genetics;
  • At least two years' post-MSc experience;
  • Proven organisational capacity, as well as administrative and technical skill in a laboratory environment;
  • Capacity to work independently as well as part of a group;
  • Good verbal and written communication skills;
  • Proven experience in at least one of the following two research fields:
    • Genomics (particularly NGS for genome assembly and transcriptions) and Bioinformatics (with proficiency in the use of software such as CLC Bio and/or Genenious and/or Bioconductor or other relevant freeware); and/or
    • Molecular Plant Biology (including molecular cloning, tissue culture and transformation techniques);
  • Computer literacy in terms of MS Office.

Desirable
  • Experience in the handling of postgraduate students;
  • Language proficiency in English, also preferably in Afrikaans;
  • Valid driver's licence.
