Job Details

School of Agriculture and Food Sciences

Job number: 507530

The University of Queensland's School of Agriculture and Food Sciences conducts world-leading research that addresses complex international concerns about food security and sustainable agricultural production.

The role

Internal quality of mango fruit is a key driver of consumer satisfaction and repeat purchase. Physiological flesh disorders, such as jelly seed and flesh breakdown, can significantly affect consumer behaviour. Research-based recommendations are required to assist the production of more resistant fruit and to detect susceptible fruit on the packing line so that they can be selectively marketed.

This PhD would characterise flesh tissue manifesting increasingly severe disorders. Based on morphological, anatomical, physiological, biochemical and/ or molecular diagnosis it will aim to define the mechanism and suggest approaches to avoiding and/ or managing the problem. Importantly, it would define the relationships between inductive postharvest treatment and handling practices and expression of disorders.

The person

Applicants will have a First Class Honours degree or equivalent. To be successful, you will require basic expertise and experience in one or more of the following areas: plant biology, plant physiology or plant molecular biology.

To be eligible to apply, you must also meet the entry requirements for Higher Degrees by Research at UQ .
