RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Department of Veterinary Tropical Diseases requires highly skilled, knowledgeable and versatile Senior Veterinary Technologist with technical experience in the veterinary technology disciplines of Virology, Bacteriology and Serology. The incumbent will be responsible for:
  • Providing technical support and diagnostic services to staff members, postgraduate students, veterinary community and research visitors in the abovementioned disciplines;
  • Assisting in management and maintenance of quality system of research and training laboratories;
  • Providing research support to the Tuberculosis group;
  • Developing test methods and validations towards SANAS accreditation;
  • Training staff.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • National Diploma Veterinary Technology;
  • Registered with the South African Veterinary Council;
  • SANAS: Professional short courses in laboratory systems (ISO 17025) and internal auditing (for all standards) (five days);
  • Six years' relevant experience in laboratory technology (e.g. Microbiology, Serology, Parasitology and Molecular biology);
  • Two years' experience in financial administration and quality assurance;
  • Virology: Should have experience in veterinary virology, including, but not limited to in vitro cell and virus culture technologies;
  • Bacteriology: Should have hands on experience in performing general bacteriology techniques, including the execution and interpretation of Salmonella serotyping techniques, as well as Minimum Inhibition Concentration determination tests (MIC);
  • Serology: Should be familiar with tests for the detection of Brucella antibodies (Compliment Fixation and Rose Bengal assays) and capable of performing and interpret Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assays (ELISA) without supervision;
  • Laboratory management and quality assurance: Should be able to perform and record consumable stock control and equipment maintenance, to implement and maintain accreditation systems and liaise with Department of Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries for regulatory documentation.


REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
  • Be able to work on own initiative;
  • Good interpersonal skills;
  • Must be able to perform under pressure and work extended hours;
  • Good team work skills;
  • Managing skills.


ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
  • Bachelor of Technology in Veterinary Technology;
  • Bachelor of Technology in Quality Management;
  • Two years' laboratory quality systems for research laboratories.


The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
