Job Details

The Senior Lecturer (Pathway three) will provide strategic and operational leadership in flexible and evening teaching in the School of Humanities with a particular focus on programmes in English Literature. S/he will act as Director of Part-Time Programmes, including short courses across the School, and as Programme Director for the BA in English Literature and Community Engagement (ELCE). The starting date for the post is 1 August 2019, or as soon as possible thereafter.

The successful applicant will have significant experience as a teacher at undergraduate level in a higher education setting and experience of teaching management and leadership.

The successful applicant will take the lead role in developing and overseeing the ELCE programme, actively taking on a range of administrative duties and line-managing a small teaching team. Alongside administrative duties, s/he will teach at undergraduate level on the ELCE programme, undertake independent scholarship in English Literature and/or research on English-related pedagogic issues, and may contribute to strategic initiatives around widening participation in the wider University. This post seeks to strengthen the commitment to widening participation and diversity on this programme and more broadly.

The Department of English in the School of Humanities combines excellence in teaching with a lively research culture. We are committed to research-led teaching at undergraduate and MA level, and to the fostering of postgraduate research of the highest quality.

The innovative part-time degree in English Literature and Community Engagement is the first programme of its kind in the country and has been running successfully since 2008. The Department of English, and the wider School of Humanities, also offers a variety of taster courses in the local community including the six-month return-to-study courses, Reading English Literature and Ways Into History, and a number of courses that are co-designed each year with external partner organisations. The ELCE programme is offered over six years part-time, with most of the teaching concentrated on one evening per week (with 3 cohorts offered on a Tuesday and 3 on a Wednesday 6-9pm). Students on the programme range in age from early 20s to mid-70s and are from an exceptionally wide range of backgrounds. In addition to studying a wide range of literature in English, each student undertakes a community engagement project as part of their studies in years 1-4 of the programme. The ELCE programme now has a well-established community-partner network, with partners including libraries, civil society organisations, charities and schools with whom students work to develop their projects.

Please note the job title prior to 1st August 2019 is Senior Teaching Fellow.

The appointment start date is 1 August 2019, or as soon as possible thereafter
