Job Details

This post will specifically involve developing cold-atom accelerometers to measure gravity fields and gradients thereof. This sensor will have applications in civil engineering, geophysics, navigation and mineral prospecting. Our novel system involves dual (or multiple) sensors phase-stabilised through a fiber optic Michelson interferometer. This system aims to provide multi-point gravity imaging, partial tensor gravity gradiometry, as well as measuring higher-order gradients for increased target depth determination. You will develop the high power Raman laser system for probing and controlling the atomic states. Further to this the role will include developing composite pulse sequences to improve signal fidelity and to implement higher momentum transfer pulses to improve sensitivity. Throughout this appointment you will interact closely with PhD students and undergraduate project students, as well as other Postdoctoral Research Fellows.

You will have an MPhys/MSc in Physics, have completed a PhD* in Cold Atom Physics or related discipline, and have a strong background in one or more of the following areas:
  • Laser cooling and trapping
  • Atom interferometry
  • Raman laser design and control
  • Composite pulse development
  • NIR optics and electro-optics.

Skills in one or more of the following areas are desirable:
  • Developing automated experimental characterization set-ups (e.g. Labview or other Test and Measurement automation software)
  • Basic electronic design including RF systems.
  • Simulation and data processing (e.g. Mathematica, Comsol, Python, etc)

For further information, please contact Dr Tim Freegarde at: tim.freegarde@soton.ac.uk

There will be some travel involved both within the United Kingdom and abroad to conduct research, visit collaborators, and attend conferences.

*Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who have submitted their thesis for a PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Research Assistant will be given.

Application Procedure

You should submit your completed online application form. The application deadline will be midnight on the closing date stated above. If you need any assistance, please call Charlene Tyson (Recruitment Team) on +44 (0) 23 8059 6803. Please quote reference 1144419WF on all correspondence.

We aim to be an equal opportunities employer and welcome applications from all sections of the community.

Please note that applications from agencies will not be accepted unless indicated in the job advert.
