Job Details

You will take the lead on the delivery of a portfolio of high voltage testing programmes for a wide range of external customers. While many of the tests that we conduct are against well defined international standards, our clients often come to us with challenging, non-standard requirements which will require the development of bespoke experimental programmes. This is a client facing role, with many of our tests being witnessed by our clients and their independent witnesses.

This is a busy and varied role which involves working on multiple simultaneous projects which are at different stages in their life cycle. The Test Engineer is responsible for managing incoming enquiries, working with the Laboratory Manager to develop quotations and test plans, scheduling incoming work, conducting tests through to the final delivery of reports. In addition to this, the Test Engineer is a member of the TDHVL Management Team, contributing to the effective running of a multi-disciplinary facility with a wide range of different equipment. The laboratory is certified to ISO9001, ISO14001 and OHSAS 18001 (see https://www.highvoltage.ecs.soton.ac.uk/certification-and-scope for details), and prior experience of working under similar standards is highly desirable. You can also expect to be working with a range of experienced researchers from a range of different technical backgrounds.

To be successful in your new role you will have a skill level equivalent to a minimum of HNC/NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in Electronic Engineering (or a directly related discipline) and significant experience in the safe operation of electrical test equipment; although a working knowledge of high voltage test techniques is desirable, full equipment specific training will be provided by our experienced team. Further details of the role are available in the job description and person specification.

We are an inclusive team that embraces diversity and the benefits this brings. We also know that career development is important so will ensure you have opportunities to enhance your skills. We are committed to work-life balance and offer a range of great benefits that includes a contributory pension scheme; holiday entitlement of 20 days rising to 24 after 4 years plus 8 bank holidays and 6 additional holidays (closure days); subsidised health and fitness facilities on-site; cycle to work scheme; a range of discounts which include restaurants, retail outlets and entertainment.

Due consideration will be given to applicants who have taken a career break. The University has a generous maternity policy and onsite childcare facilities.

We look forward to receiving your application, however, we welcome visits or telephone discussions prior to application please contact Dr James Pilgrim ( j.a.pilgrim@soton.ac.uk ), or Mr Neil Palmer ( nlp@ecs.soton.ac.uk ).

Application Procedure

You should submit your completed online application form. The application deadline will be midnight on the closing date stated above. If you need any assistance, please call Sam Stubbs (Recruitment Team) on +44 (0) 23 8059 4046. Please quote reference 11143219FP on all correspondence.

We aim to be an equal opportunities employer and welcome applications from all sections of the community. Please note that applications from agencies will not be accepted unless indicated in the job advert.
