Job Details

We are looking for two junior researchers with a strong background in applied micro-econometrics and an interest in the econometric/statistical analysis of social and economic aspects of health. A particular expertise and interest in policy impact evaluation related to health using quasi-experimental methods would be highly desirable. The main role of the positions is to contribute to the recently established cross-departmental Research Programme on Health and Health Systems, which covers the broad areas of (1) policy impact evaluation in health, using quasi-experimental methods, (2) social and economic determinants and/or consequences of health, (3) measurement and explanation of health inequalities, and (4) the economics of health behaviours.

The equivalent of one of the positions is funded by a major, recently awarded European Union H2020 project on the health and economic aspects of heat and air pollution in Europe. Hence, a partial contribution to this project by either one or both of the postholders would be expected.

Your Role

In collaboration with the Head of the Research Programme on Health and Health Systems (Professor Marc Suhrcke), the research associate will be asked to:
  • contribute to and/or lead on the production of research outputs
  • contribute to and/or lead the acquisition of external research funding
  • communicate the results of research to different audiences (academics, policymakers and the general public) through written reports and papers, presentations at conferences, workshops and other forums.

The specific areas of research will largely depend on the specific qualifications and interests of the postholders, but should be within the four broad themes of the cross-departmental Research Programme outlined above. There is an expectation for the postholders to actively seek health-related collaboration with one or more of LISER's departments or platforms (Living Conditions, Labour Market, Urban Development & Mobility, Behavioural and Experimental Economics).

Key Responsibilities
  • to review and critique relevant literature relating to areas including research methods, applied health econometrics and clinical evidence
  • to prepare, analyse and interpret research data
  • to write or contribute to publications or disseminate research findings, including public engagement to non-research specialist organisations using other appropriate media
  • to make presentations at conferences or exhibit work in other appropriate events
  • to develop ideas and necessary collaborations for application of research outcomes
  • to decide on research programmes and methodologies, often in collaboration with colleagues
  • to identify opportunities for new research and contribute to the writing of grant proposals
  • extend, transform and apply knowledge acquired from scholarship to research and appropriate external activities
  • to initiate and develop collaborative work internally (across the three departments of LISER) and externally, and the fostering of internal and external networks in order to advance research and exploit opportunities for collaboration and funding sources.

Your Profile
  • Ph.D. in economics, health economics, statistics, applied econometrics, quantitative social science or similar discipline
  • Expertise and strong interest in health, with a focus on social and economic aspects of health
  • Extensive experience in quantitative research (using Stata, R, etc.)
  • Fluent in English (speaking and writing).

We Offer
  • A dynamic, growing and well-equipped research environment with good working conditions
  • Personal workspace
  • Stimulating work environment
  • Resources for the participation in international meetings and conferences and hosting of collaborating visitors
  • Internationally competitive remuneration.
