Would you like to join a team that is responsible for ensuring that the University of Leeds Farm balances commercial and research success?

The University of Leeds has an Agricultural Estate comprising of 5 Farms over 317ha located to the west of Tadcaster, which supports both academic research and teaching, as well as being a commercially operated arable and pig farm that hosts research and innovation projects. One of the farms is rapidly expanding its role as a research facility with an £11m investment on both indoor and outdoor pig production facilities in the Centre for Innovation Excellence in Livestock (CIEL), with building underway expanding the unit to support around 420 sows plus the related number of youngstock to fatteners the mother stock will produce.To head up this expanded unit and its new facilities we require an experienced Estate/Farm Manager who will take responsibility for the universities farming operations, with a focus on pig and arable.

You will be responsible for the efficient running of the farms within the requirements of its core purposes as a centre for research, development and teaching whilst maintaining a commercial aspect. You will support ongoing development of the farm estate to ensure it can operate effectively, including identifying opportunities for income generation as well as to ensure the farm operations are sustainable, ensuring that the farms are run under best practice, being a beacon of innovation. You will work closely with academic staff, research students and other bodies as well as the director of estates to ensure the facility meets the needs of all parties and continues to attract research projects. You will be responsible for the day to day management of the farm estate, managing a small team of staff as well as relationships with a range of commercial partners and contractors. You will be commercially aware and able to effectively negotiate and influence others to ensure effective running of all aspects of the estate and you will be equally comfortable around a board room table as you are in and amongst the animals on farm, with the ability to undertake management tasks such as budgets and reports whilst having a practical hands on approach taking pride in the animals you produce. Above all you will have excellent communication skills and extensive experience of building effective working relationships at all levels. Previous experience of working in higher education or with research partners would be desirable.
