Job Details

Are you an experienced and ambitious Research and Innovation Professional looking to further your career in one of the UK's leading research intensive Universities?

Would you like to help progress the field of advanced and engineered materials in the University and the UK?

Are you a confident leader capable of building excellent working relationships with academic and industrial colleagues?

This is an exciting opportunity to drive the development of two major initiatives in the University of Leeds - the University's Bragg Centre for Materials Research, and 'Royce at Leeds', the Leeds spoke of the national Henry Royce Institute for Advanced Materials. The University of Leeds is one of the founding partners of the UK's Henry Royce Institute for Advanced Materials. This is a £235M investment in state-of-the-art equipment and research facilities, and comprises a consortium including the Universities of Manchester, Leeds, Cambridge, Liverpool, Sheffield, Oxford, and Imperial College.

For further information see http://www.royce.ac.uk/ . The remit is to develop advanced materials research for the UK, with a focus on promoting translation from discovery to application; this is one key element of the Government's industrial strategy, which lays a particular emphasis on enhancing the commercialisation of the UK's world-leading research. In particular, the University of Leeds is championing the 'Atoms-to-Devices' theme of the Royce Institute, jointly with Imperial College, London. The Royce at Leeds activities ( www.leeds.ac.uk/royce ) are encapsulated within the wider development of a new dedicated University centre for materials research, the Bragg Centre for Materials Research. This consolidates significant materials research infrastructure from multiple disciplines across the University into new collaborative state-of-the-art research facilities, and itself is part of a £96M capital project that will also provide new accommodation for the Schools of Physics & Astronomy and Computing ( https://campusdevelopments.leeds.ac.uk/portfolio-item/engineering-and-physical-sciences/ ).

Playing a key role in leading the development and implementation of the strategic plans for both Royce at Leeds and the Bragg Research Centre, you will proactively develop new research and translational opportunities, horizon-scan and gather intelligence on emergent activities and capitalise on such opportunities. You will establish and manage high level relationships with a wide range of world leading academics, and research and innovation support staff, across the University and in our UK and international partner institutions, and will build strong relationships with industrial and governmental partners, and funding bodies. Possessing a relevant degree (or equivalent) in Physical Sciences or Engineering, and with relevant research experience gained via a PhD or equivalent experience in industry or academia, you will have experience of developing research and innovation strategies in complex organisations, excellent project management skills, and the ability to build effective and value creating partnerships. You will also work with colleagues across the University to provide a coordinated service across the full range of research and innovation activity including: knowledge-led innovation support to businesses (contract/collaborative research and consultancy, placement schemes) and commercial exploitation of intellectual property; promotion of skills development programmes; and, provision of support across the full range of research funders (including the UK Research Councils, European Union, government departments and charities).
