General:

- Lead the Department's program aimed at mentoring the large number of staff members engaged with PhD studies.
- Provide teaching relief by lecturing selected modules specializing in Genetics or Forensic Science.
- Teach and assess postgraduate students.
- Provide study leadership at postgraduate level.
- Supervise master's and PhD students.
- Conduct research and publish it in accredited journals.
- Source external research funding and forge linkage with the industry.
- Participate in community projects.
- Recruit postgraduate students.
- Perform general administration duties as applicable at university level.
Inherent requirements:
- PhD in Genetics or equivalent degree in a closely related field from the Biological Sciences.
- Substantial track record of academic service at a tertiary institution.
- Proven experience in supervision of graduated postgraduate students.
- Proven research record of relevant publications in national and international accredited journals.
- Proven experience in the presentation of papers/posters at national scholarly conferences.
- Proven national recognition for specialist expertise and research in a specific area of scholarship.
- An NRF rating or demonstrate potential for obtaining an NRF rating.
Required competencies:
- Show initiative and be able to work independently, to create and drive the Departmental mentorship program.
- Experience in developing/leading a mentoring programme for postgraduate scientists.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Broad knowledge of the theoretical principles of Genetics and Forensic Science, and the major fields of specialization within these disciplines, in order to both mentor and lecture across a range of specializations.
- The ability to function with ease in the University's richly diverse working environment.
- Strong work ethic, emphasizing both efficiency and quality of work.
Recommendations:
- An established network involving collaboration with subject specialists, to be able to identify and integrate additional expertise (from outside the UFS environment) into the mentorship program.
- Experience in the fields of both Genetics and Forensics, to accommodate both fields of specialization in the Department.
