MRes/PhD Bursaries in Economics - Department of Economics

The Department of Economics at the University of Bristol is pleased to invite applications for one or more MRes/PhD bursaries in economics. Successful applicants will study for the 12-month MRes Economics degree, followed by a PhD in Economics. They will receive a full fee waiver plus a stipend of £15,000 per year for up to four years in total as well as undertaking teaching duties within the Department.

The awards will be for four years, starting in the autumn of 2019. The scheme pays a stipend of £15,000 per year and waives the full tuition fee. In addition, award-holders will receive teaching income of up to £4000 per year, depending on the volume of teaching assigned.

As part of the Hourly Paid Teaching contract, award-holders will be required to teach 50-90 contact hours each year during the PhD years, and will be expected to undertake marking/grading duties. They will also be expected to undertake teacher training sessions as assigned.

Awards are renewable at the end of each year, subject to satisfactory academic progress and teaching performance, for up to four years of funding. Admission to the PhD from the MRes is subject to academic performance and the availability of supervision in the candidate's chosen area.

Applicants should hold, or be close to completing, a strong master's degree (distinction or merit), or a very strong undergraduate degree (1st or 2.1), in economics, mathematics or another quantitative discipline.

Applicants already holding an MRes Economics degree or equivalent can be considered for direct entry into the PhD programme with 3.5 years of funding. These applicants will need to prepare a 1000-word research proposal that lies within the interests of one or more potential supervisors in the Department and upload it as part of their PhD application.
