Job Details
The incumbent will be required to provide support and assistance to users and Computer Laboratory Administrators in order to provide an efficient and effective student computing laboratory service at UP. This will include:

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.

- Communicating with various stakeholders within the Department and the University;
- Facilities management, identifying requirements for the laboratories, preparing laboratories, performing routine computer check, tidiness of laboratories, monitoring and maintaining TuksPrint and the relevant printers within the computer laboratory environment, security, reporting and maintaining student accounts;
- Incident management which includes client liaison, general enquiries, a positive service attitude, handling daily laboratory inquiries, providing on-going hardware and software troubleshooting service for users, reporting problems and referring unresolved incidents;
- Computer-based testing which includes assisting in the solving of technical problems that might arise, and general test administration;
- Teamwork, including backup behaviour, co-ordinating, feedback sessions, monitoring, team leadership and orientation;
- Providing first and second line support services to clients.
- Computer maintenance.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Grade 12;
- Two years' hands on experience as a Computer Laboratory Assistant working in an educational computing facility supporting the academic goals of the institution;
- Experience needs to include basic client support, and basic hardware and software support;
OR
- A relevant two or three year tertiary qualification with IT/Computer-related subjects and knowledge of the tertiary educational environment;
- Certifications in relevant IT courses may be considered in place of IT subjects (A+/N+/Windows certifications/Network certifications/programming certifications/Novell certifications);
- One year hands on experience as a Computer Laboratory Assistant working in an educational computing facility supporting the academic goals of the institution;
- Experience needs to include basic client support, and basic hardware and software support.
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
- MS Active Directory knowledge;
- Linux knowledge
- Technically proficient in hardware and software support and maintenance;
- Effective supervisory skills;
- Client support skills;
- Ability to liaise with clients and resolve conflict.
ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
- A three-year degree in IT or IT Education;
- Relevant certifications in IT courses;
- Two years' hands on experience as a Computer Laboratory Assistant working in an educational computing facility supporting the academic goals of the institution;
- Experience needs to include:
- Basic client support;
- Practical experience in computer hardware and software maintenance;
- Experience in computer-based training;
- Ability to monitor and assist in the running of the CBT system with focus on keeping the integrity of the system and the University.
