Job Details

Objectives

The applicant will develop a multidisciplinary project focused on early pregnancy physiology. The project will utilize an established mouse model to elucidate mechanisms how maternal dietary challenge around conception induces offspring health risks. Previously, we have shown that poor nutrition exclusively around conception can increase the long-term health risks in offspring, and early markers are detectable even prior to implantation. The aim of the current project is to elucidate underlying pathways involved in induction of short- and long-term consequences including neurophysiological alterations.

The ideal candidate should have solid knowledge in molecular and cellular biology, as well as physiology, early development and proteomics. Practical experience in animal experiments, proteomics and molecular and cell biology, together with problem solving, initiative and management competences, is strongly preferred but not required.

Regular meetings and workshops within the EU-funded DohART-NET International Training Network will supplement the training and support provided at University of Southampton. The successful candidate will also benefit from work secondments in the participating academic and industrial teams.

Appointment

The appointment will be on a temporary basis for a period of 36 months(Regular employment contract). The candidate will receive a Monthly Living Allowance plus a Mobility Allowance compliant with the applicable EC Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions-ITN general conditions. Under UK legislation the living allowance, mobility allowance and any applicable family allowance are all deemed taxable. The gross salary calculated after Employer's costs will then be subject to Employee's deductions for Tax, NI and Pension contributions where applicable. The sterling salary payable will also be affected by exchange rate fluctuations and will therefore be subject to six monthly reviews.

Early Stage Researcher Salary Range: £36,958 (without family allowance) to £41,758 (with family allowance)

Eligibility

Applicants should meet the following eligibility criteria:
  • have not been awarded a PhD already
  • BSc or MSc or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in biology or related fields
  • have less than 4 years research experience at the signature of the contract (measured from the time the Master's degree has been obtained)
