Job Details

The role is based in the School of Electronics and Computer Science, and working with Roke Manor, the Software Sustainability Institute and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. You will be responsible for delivering research as part of an interdisciplinary team led by Dr. Adriane Chapman. The wider team will also include staff from our partner organisations. The role is at the interface of provenance and machine learning and/or stream processing technologies, with a particular focus on provenance capture and usage.

The project aims is to create mechanisms for inferring provenance from breadcrumbs of data already existing within a given system. Currently, provenance capture occurs via system developers adding code that observes data and process interaction and records it. Unfortunately, the cost of capturing provenance for a good coverage of systems in real environments is so prohibitively expensive that wide-scale provenance has been evaluated and discarded by a number of government organizations. This project will develop a suite of techniques for cheaper adoption of data provenance by eliminating points of high-cost-observation and instead reconstructing the jigsaw of what could have happened based on the known available data and processes. These techniques will be deployable in a range of classic system architectures. In order to make this ambitious goal more tractable, this proposal aims to create two distinct, exemplar architectures in which the provenance inference tools can be deployed and tested. Working closely with team members, you will conduct a range of experimental testing and analysis of site data, building understanding of the systemic factors affecting aging of these materials.

You should have a PhD* in Computer Science, or equivalent professional qualifications and work experience. You will bring a detailed understanding and knowledge of sensor stream capture and compression techniques, abduction reasoning and machine learning. You will be expected to report to the project group at regular meetings, and will also be responsible for preparation of publications and presentations at conferences and project meetings. Experience of collaborating with colleagues in different disciplines would also be desirable.

*Applications will be considered from candidates who are nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
