Job Details
The School is seeking to employ an enthusiastic and committed Teaching Associate to contribute to a vibrant and growing suite of undergraduate Sociology degree programmes. It is an exciting time for Sociology at the University of Birmingham following the relocation of the discipline into the School of Social Policy and subsequent curriculum review that has re-energised our programmes. The successful applicant will contribute to the delivery of small group teaching, as well as formative and summative assessment to the undergraduate teaching programme within the School of Social Policy.
To contribute to elements of teaching within a clear and established teaching programme (set by the academic responsible for the course, who supervises and manages the role-holder)
Summary of Role
• Teaching support to academic staff
• Work within a clear and established teaching programme set by the academic responsible for the course, who supervises and manages the role-holder. The academic supervisor, not the role-holder, is responsible for designing the course content, mode of delivery, and assessment criteria and arrangements.
Main Duties/Responsibilities
• Deliver teaching activities within a class, tutorial or other group context in support of teaching for which others have primary responsibility
• Supervise class activities within a framework deigned by others
• Assist students as required offering advice to help them with learning problems
• Provide support to staff engaged in teaching
• Assist with the marking of coursework, applying assessment criteria, as directed. (If the marking is summative, including assessed work contributing to the final award-as a mark or a credit-such as unseen examinations, essays, dissertations or presentations, then the role-holder's marking is subject to validation by the academic supervisor)
• Update own subject knowledge, and to develop own teaching expertise
• Carry out administrative tasks related directly to the delivery of teaching
Person Specification
• Practical experience of applying the relevant skills and techniques for the role
• Ability to analyse information and communicate effectively
• Ability to access and organise resources successfully
• Educated at degree level
