Job Details
Specifically, this part of the project will develop a linear array of miniature sensors for dynamically mapping surface charge for onward integration into a data analysis system to evaluate the sensitivity and resolution of these new sensors.
Main roles and responsibilities
Joining a multidisciplinary team, the successful candidate will be responsible for the design and testing of novel miniature sensor arrays for surface charge measurement over small distances. The data from these sensors would train the machine learning algorithms developed by colleagues in computer science on the project.
They would also be expected to assist in correlating the sensor data with other measurements taken from the same area such as topography, work function, XPS and SEM or microCT imaging to build forensic correlative images for robust detection of surface health and remaining life of surface.
The applicant should have a relevant PhD* in electronics or physics or related science areas. They are likely to have an experimental background, together with experience of designing instrumentation systems or analog circuits. Some experience of surface analysis techniques and knowledge of Tribology and/or material science/surface engineering is desirable. They will work in a team of three PDRAs being recruited to this EPSRC funded project. There is an opportunity to become involved in PhD supervision as well as undergraduate and graduate projects associated with this area.
About the University
The University of Southampton is an institution in the top one per cent of world universities* and one of the UK's top 15 research-intensive universities. We have an international reputation for research, teaching and enterprise and hold an Athena SWAN Silver award.
About the Faculty
You will join a leading Engineering Faculty with an excellent record of collaborative research with industry and academic institutions in the UK and abroad. The Faculty offers exceptional research facilities, including a world class clean room for microengineering, and hosta nCATS, the National Centre for Advanced Tribology at Southampton.
*QS World University Rankings 2012-13
* Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded, the title of Research Assistant will be assigned.
