The College of Medical and Dental Sciences teaches six undergraduate programmes, Biomaterials, Biomedical Sciences, Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy, with Biomedical ethics being an essential part of students education since 1995. Changes in staff and the revised GMC Outcomes for Graduates offer us an opportunity to re-think how we teach professional ethics and law all of our students. We are seeking to recruit a Lecturer in biomedical ethics and law to deliver teaching of ethics and law across all programmes. Also as part of an upcoming revision of the MB ChB programme we wish to expand the teaching of ethics and law in both our 5 year and 4 year (graduate-entry) programmes to ensure that our graduates continue to demonstrate the highest ethical standards. It is expected that the Senior Lecturer and Lecturer will also contribute to all the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes run by the College of Medical and Dental Sciences. The post holder will be based in the Institute of Clinical Sciences, one of the eight Institutes in the College of Medical and Dental Sciences.

Summary of Role

The post holder will teach an integrated approach to health care ethics and law on MBChB (4 and 5 year programmes), Dentistry, BSc in Biomedical Science, Pharmacy and Nursing undergraduate programmes.

The post holder will lead aspects of an innovative curriculum in biomedical ethics, contributing to the whole range of teaching and administration. This will include a substantial contribution to: (a) the management, development (including programme/module review) and delivery of teaching and assessment at all levels, especially the creation of a new intercalatied degree in Health Care Ethics and Law,; and (b) enhancement of the student experience. The role will also involve developing and advising others, including: (a) providing expert advice to staff and students, and (b) developing and advising others on learning and teaching tasks and methods relevant to biomedical ethics and law.

The postholder will contribute to the College of Medical and Dental Sciences postgraduate and continuing professional development programmes within the subject area of Health Care Ethics and Law.

You will advance the practice of teaching within the Institute, take a role in leading curriculum development, and play an important role in student academic support. You will also deliver excellent teaching that inspires students, and is informed by discipline-based research.

Management and administration is likely to involve contributions at programme and

Institute level, and making an important contribution to some managerial/leadership (e.g.

working groups) within the University.

Main Duties

Teaching focused Lecturer role-holders will:

• To develop and lead an innovative, integrated and discipline based research curriculum in health care ethics and law and within own area of subject specialism to undergraduates, postgraduates and CPD students.

• Contribute to the design and leadership of modules with other colleagues, specifically the new intercalated degree in social studies in medicine

• Develop a curriculum which maximises the use of a wide variety of learning resources and methodologies

• Develop interprofessional learning opportunities in line with College strategy

• Represent Biomedical ethics and law in activities such as University open days and other public engagement events

• Work closely with and advise senior colleagues as appropriate, eg Director of Education, MBChB programme Lead, Healthcare Ethics and Law lead.

• To develop and advise more junior colleagues involved in facilitating biomedical ethics and law small group tutorials.

• Frequently update their own subject expertise, and undertake personal professional development in teaching, including self-reflection on own teaching, using student and peer review feedback, to enhance own teaching and learning processes; and

• Contribute to the administration/management of teaching across the Institute/College

• Make a major contribution to some administrative activities within the University (e.g. appeals panels, working groups).

Person Specification

The post holder will have a higher degree relevant to Health Care Ethics and Law or relevant senior clinical experience.

They will be able to demonstrate excellence in teaching health care ethics and law to undergraduate students studying on a health care related degree course. As the majority of the teaching will be delivered to MBChB students, preference will be given to this area of teaching experience.

Teaching occurs within the Medical School and within clinical placements.

Experience of teaching in both of these settings will be advantageous.

The post holder will be able to demonstrate the ability to design and deliver health care ethics and law module materials successfully. They will have the ability to assess and organise resources effectively.

Experience of interprofessional learning design and delivery will be advantageous

They will also be able to understand and contribute to broader management/administration processes within the teaching and assessment of health care ethics and law
