Job Details
We are looking to appoint an experienced researcher for a study to explore the working conditions, work cultures and contexts in which junior doctors work, and other interceding factors or patterns associated with psychological distress, including suicidality.
Summary of Role
We are seeking to appoint an autonomous mixed-methods researcher to undertake this research as part of a NIHR funded study to identify specific working conditions and contexts associated with elevated psychological distress and suicidality among junior doctors. This mixed methods study combines the following: (i) qualitative methods comprising in-depth interviews with junior doctors (ii) a cross-sectional online survey with junior doctors working in the NHS; and (iii) stakeholder workshop to disseminate findings and generate recommendations.
The post-holder will be based in the Institute of Applied Health Research at the University of Birmingham. The post offers an exciting opportunity to work on a study within a multidisciplinary research team. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will have relevant experience of conducting mixed-methods research, including undertaking qualitative research within the field of mental health and/or research on sensitive topics.
Main Duties / Responsibilities
The responsibilities will include the responsibilities outlined below.
• Recruit and consent research participants
• Collect, analyse and interpret qualitative interview data using appropriate methods
• Collect, analyse and interpret quantitative survey data using appropriate methods
• Analyse and interpret data
• Disseminate research findings for publication, research seminars etc
• Facilitate workshop event and write up outputs
• Undertake management/administration arising from research
• Contribute to Departmental/School research-related activities and research-related administration
• Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines
Person Specification
• First degree in area of specialism and normally, a higher degree relevant to research area or equivalent qualifications
• Evidence of successful and timely completion of mixed-methods research
• Self-motivated, pro-active, and able to use initiative where appropriate
• Knowledge and understanding of mental ill health and/or occupational stress
• Ability to communicate complex information clearly both orally and in written form
• Excellent interpersonal skills
• Good knowledge of ethical and research governance in health related research
• Experience of participant recruitment and taking informed consent
• Experience of undertaking qualitative data collection methods in sensitive areas (e.g. interviews)
• Understanding of and ability to develop questionnaires
• Experience of using quantitative data collection methods (e.g. questionnaires)
• Evidence of peer-reviewed publication from previous mixed-methods research
• Computer literate; experience of qualitative (e.g. NVivo) and statistical analysis (e.g. SPSS/STATA) software
• Analyse and interpret research findings and results
• Experience of working in multi-disciplinary research teams
• High level analytical capability
• Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
