An exciting research position is available to conduct research at the University of Bristol and Queen Mary London (joint appointment), on surrogate modelling-based optimisation of jet nozzles to minimise acoustics. Applications are invited for a fully- funded Post-Doctoral Research Associate/Senior Associate (RA) posts as part of the JINA project funded by EPSRC.
JINA is a collaborative project between Bristol and Queen Mary London, combining state-of-the-art experimentation and simulation applied to jet nozzle acoustics. The objective is to develop and apply high-fidelity simulation and optimisation technology to jet nozzle exit geometries to minimise acoustic signatures, and to validate the methods and results with state-of-the-art experiments performed in the new acoustic test facility at Bristol.
The position is available on a fixed term basis for up to 9 months, based at Bristol but joint-funded by Bristol and QML, starting July 2019 (or as soon after as possible). The focus of this role is as follows:
• Development and application of a GPU-enabled LES code (CABARET) to jet nozzle acoustic simulations, including validation and analysis of flowfield physics.
• Engagement with Bristol experimental phase of JINA to validate code and physics captured.
• Develop optimisation and surrogate modelling harness to wrap-around CABARET.
• Coordinate work at Bristol and QML in surrogate modelling-based optimisation.
• Engagement with Bristol experimental phase of JINA to validate optimised geometries.
The researcher will work closely with Professor Allen and Dr Azarpeyvand at Bristol, and the project partners Professor Toropov and Dr Karabasov at QML. They will attend regular project meetings hosted by the partners and spend some time working at QML, and will contribute to project deliverables and dissemination activities. There is also the opportunity to provide supervision of summer interns and undergraduate student projects and mentorship of PhD students.
