Lecturer: New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP) in the African Languages in the School of Languages & Literatures

The New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP) is funded by the national Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and is aimed at producing the 'next generation' of academics for South Africa's universities. It does this by identifying promising young academics, appointing them to full time, permanent positions (usually at lecturer level) and placing them on a six year developmental programme. In the first three years of the programme, appointees are given a much reduced workload to allow them to complete a doctoral degree. In some instances, the requirement may be for the completion of a master's degree with progression to some doctoral level work. In addition, appointees are mentored and supported as they are introduced to academic life particularly with regard to their teaching responsibilities. A number of other opportunities are also open to appointees including support for research.
The nGAP offers a rare opportunity for individuals with an interest in pursuing an academic career to be developed in a supportive programme designed for their needs.

- Interested in and can demonstrate commitment to an academic career
- 40 years of age and younger
- Eligible for postgraduate study at doctoral
- Willing to commit to an appointment at Rhodes University for the full 6 years of the nGAP.

Requirements:
- A Masters' degree in African Language Studies or equivalent preferably with progress being made towards a PhD.
- Tutoring or facilitation experience required.
- Candidates should have ability to teach in the following disciplinary areas: Translation Studies, Language Planning, IsiXhosa Literature and Second Language teaching in isiXhosa
