Lecturer: New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP) in the Department of Management

Academic, Eastern Cape Grahamstown

R 433 689 - R 567 661 Annually

Recognising that diversity is important in achieving excellence, Rhodes University especially encourages South African members of designated groups to apply.

Please note that this appointment will be made in line with the requirements of the Employment Equity Act of RSA and the University's recruitment and selection policies and equity strategies. The initial focus will be on equity candidates.

The New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP) is funded by the national Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and is aimed at producing the 'next generation' of academics for South Africa's universities. It does this by identifying promising young academics, appointing them to full time, permanent positions (usually at lecturer level) and placing them on a six year developmental programme. In the first three years of the programme, appointees are given a much reduced workload to allow them to complete a doctoral degree. In some instances, the requirement may be for the completion of a master's degree with progression to some doctoral level work. In addition, appointees are mentored and supported as they are introduced to academic life particularly with regard to their teaching responsibilities. A number of other opportunities are also open to appointees including support for research.

The nGAP offers a rare opportunity for individuals with an interest in pursuing an academic career to be developed in a supportive programme designed for their needs.

Positions in the (nGAP) are aimed at individuals who are:
  • Interested in and can demonstrate commitment to an academic career
  • 40 years of age and younger
  • Eligible for postgraduate study at doctoral level
  • Willing to commit to an appointment at Rhodes University for the full 6 years of the programme.

Preference will be given to Black South Africans in making appointments.
