Job Details

Applications are invited for a full time fixed term Research Fellow position until 31/08/2020 supported by the Alan Turing Institute and held at the University of Southampton. The project will investigate some foundational questions regarding the quantification of the complexity of neural networks and developing new tools to assist architecture discovery. The work will concentrate on the systematic development of numerical characteristics that capture the essence of the complexity of both the problem and of the proposed network architecture. These ideas will be tested on various specific data sets. A second part of the project will address the question of a proper topological description of time dependent data. Both these strands will be unified and implemented algorithmically.

The project is supported by the Alan Turing Institute in London and by the University of Southampton. This gives the successful candidate access to a very stimulating and varied interdisciplinary research environment. Based in Southampton, you will be joining a very successful programme supported by the EPSRC, Joining the dots: from data to insight. Sponsorship of the Alan Turing Institute will give you access to seminars, workshops, and networking events organised by the Institute.

The successful candidate should have a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in mathematics or computer science as well as a solid knowledge of deep neural networks and of the topological data analysis, and should be interested in working in a varied interdisciplinary team. The applicants should have strong programming skills in Matlab, Python, or similar, and should be experienced in developing new codes to support novel research methodology.

*Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
