Job Details

School of Mathematics and Physics ARC Centre of Excellence for Engineered Quantum Systems

The School of Mathematics and Physics is a School within the Faculty of Science at the University of Queensland. Research is carried out at the cutting edge across a broad spectrum of areas in Mathematics and Physics.

The Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Engineered Quantum Systems (EQUS) will build sophisticated quantum machines to harness the quantum world for practical applications. Our Centre will pioneer the designer quantum materials, quantum engines, and quantum imaging systems at the heart of these machines. We will solve the most challenging research problems at the interface of basic quantum physics and engineering, and work with partners in industry to translate these research discoveries into practical applications and devices. Our capacity building programs will train a new generation of scientists in cutting-edge fundamental research, innovation, and entrepreneurialism, and ultimately have a major impact on Australia's high-tech economy.

About This Opportunity

The ARC Centre of Excellence for Engineered Quantum Systems (EQUS), administered by The University of Queensland, is seeking outstanding early and mid-career female candidates for the Deborah Jin Fellowships. This Postdoctoral Research Fellowship opportunity is to perform quantum research and is available to women only.

Deborah S. Jin was a brilliant American physicist who was one of the world's foremost experts on how ordinary atoms and molecules change their behaviour at extraordinarily low temperatures. Her visionary and methodical approach made it possible to use these ultracold gases as model systems to tease out the quantum principles that lead to behaviours in real materials, such as superconductivity.

The Deborah Jin Fellowships, offered by the ARC Centre of Excellence for Engineered Quantum Systems (EQUS), honour her legacy by supporting and encouraging early-and mid-career women physicists.

The Deborah Jin Fellowship initiative will appoint two Fellows in total across the four Nodes of the Centre of Excellence (The University of Queensland, University of Sydney, Macquarie University, University of Western Australia), as determined by the candidate's expertise and research aspirations. Candidates wishing to be considered for the positions at multiple nodes must apply at each individual node.

The Fellow will perform outstanding and original, experimental or theoretical research. The Fellow will work closely with one of the following EQUS Chief Investigators (CIs):
  • Professor Matthew Davis Quantum engines with ultracold gases
  • Professor Warwick Bowen Engineering mechanical systems for quantum sensing and interfaces
  • A/Prof Arkady Fedorov Quantum phenomena with superconducting circuits
  • Professor Tom Stace Resilient quantum hardware

Our Ideal Candidate

Applicants will possess qualifications in Physics or a related field. You should also have a strong desire to develop a successful and highly-productive research career in quantum science, good general research skills, a strong methodological background, and a track record of developing and maintaining collaborations. This position is available to female candidates only.

We value diversity and inclusion, and actively encourage applications from those who bring diversity to the University. Our Diversity and Inclusion webpage contains further information if you require additional support. Accessibility requirements and/or adjustments can be directed to recruitment@uq.edu.au .

What We Can Offer

This is a full-time, fixed term position at Academic level A or B.

The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $67,542 - $113,728, plus superannuation of up to 17%.

You will be able to take advantage of UQ Sport Facilities , salary sacrificing options, on-campus childcare, discounted private health insurance, parking, development programs and many other benefits.

For further information, please review The University of Queensland's Enterprise Bargaining Agreement 2018-2021 .

Our Selection Process

We invite candidates to apply at their desired participating node. Candidates wishing to be considered for the positions at multiple nodes must apply at each individual node.

Candidates will be ranked according to selection criteria established at the corresponding node.

Interviews of shortlisted candidates will be conducted by the applicable node with recommendations made to the EQUS Centre Executive Recruitment Committee. This Committee will then provide a final rank across all candidates and make the ultimate decision on who is successful for the Fellowship. Not all nodes will make an appointment, depending on the outcome of the final ranking process.

All panel interviews for the UQ Node positions will be conducted via ZOOM Video Conferencing on the 22nd of August 2019.
