The Aga Khan University (AKU) is partnering with the University of California, San Francisco - a globally well-known centre for regenerative medicine and stem cell research - to set up the stem cell research program at Aga Khan University.

The Centre for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research (CRM), with planned state-of-the-art facilities in the future will undertake cutting edge research on stem cell and regenerative medicine on non-communicable diseases prevalent in the developing world; nurture the next generation of researchers and clinicians; and create a multidisciplinary collaborative environment that encourages innovation.

AKU-CRM is inviting applications from outstanding and ambitious candidates with experience in one or more of these areas including regenerative medicine, stem cell science, biological science or bio-engineering. Applicants who are currently involved in the broad area of developmental or stem cell biology, listed below, will also be considered:
  • Stem cells in development and disease
  • Stem cells in fate determination and differentiation
  • Stem cell niche
  • Reprogramming and differentiation
  • Endogenous regeneration
  • Stem cells genomics and epigenomics
  • Scaffolds and 3D bio-printing

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Faculty AKU-CRM, you will perform a varied set of responsibilities which include:
  • conducting wet lab research at AKU-CRM labs
  • conducting daily, weekly and monthly inventory of consumables/reagents required for the team
  • attending weekly meetings, journal clubs and research in progress and presenting in these meetings as directed by the assigned faculty
  • any other assignment as directed by the faculty.

Requirements

You should have:
  • a Masters' degree in the field of Biological Science/ Bio-Engineering or related field of research
  • candidates with a MBBS, BDS or DVM with lab based research experience can also be considered
  • minimum three years' experience in a research laboratory, post qualification
  • candidates with experience in the following areas are encouraged to apply:
    1.Cell Biology Research (e.g. Tissue Culture, Organoids generation, Patient Derived Xenografts (PDX) model Transfection)

    2. Cytogenetics (e.g. Karyotyping, Fluorescent In Situ Hybridization (FISH), comparative genomic hybridization (CGH), G-banding)

    3. Imaging Techniques such as Fluorescent microscopy, Confocal microscopy

    4. Molecular Biology Research (e.g. Cloning, real-time PCR, CRISPR-Cas9, NGS library preparation)

    5. Bio-printing (e.g. Development of scaffolds, 3D organ modeling)

    6. Stem Cell Biology Research
  • strong organizational skills with ability to handle multiple tasks assigned by the faculty
  • competent in computer usage with command over Microsoft office, statistical and imaging software
  • sound communication skills: fluent in English speaking and writing
  • strong interpersonal skills.
