Senior Research Assistant - Department of Community Health Sciences

The Department of Community Health Sciences (CHS) is a leading unit of its type in Pakistan, recognized regionally and internationally for the relevance, quality and extent of its work in support of public health and the development of primary health care systems. It comprises of five major operational units: Epidemiology & biostatistics, Health policy & management, Population & reproductive health, Environmental health, and Non-communicable diseases & mental health.

This is a grant-funded, short-term contractual position to study access to health care for the people residing in slum areas which are known to have worse health indicators than those living in rural areas. The aim of this study is to understand current health delivery patterns and health seeking behavior in urban slums in Karachi and suggest cost-effective models of care in these areas.

Responsibilities

You will be responsible for:

• providing overall supervision and training of data collectors to provide necessary guidance
• coordinating field activities so that daily objectives can be achieved, and also closely monitor the progress of work
• ensuring the availability and functionality of equipment necessary for effective field operations
• reviewing and evaluating performance of data collectors and ensuring discipline in the field
• ensuring team building and team participation in activities
• preparing and prioritizing field plan according to project deadlines
• checking the accuracy of survey forms filled by data collectors
• sorting and organizing data, both hard copy and electronic versions
• counseling of adult households who refuse to participate.

Requirements

You should have:

• a Bachelor's degree, preferably in Sociology/Community Development/Social Sciences
• minimum two years' of experience in a research setting
• ability to understand basics of research project
• good command on written and spoken English and Urdu
• good interpersonal and team building skills
• ability to document project activities.
