The research group of Political Economics of Energy Policy (Prof. Aya Kachi) in the Faculty of Business and Economics invites applications for a Research Assistant (Hilfsassistent/-in) position with a 20% appointment. The position will also be linked to the ongoing research within SCCER CREST, one of the Swiss Competence Centers for Energy Research. We are looking for a motivated student who already holds a bachelor's degree at the time of application.

Start date: September 1, 2019

Duration of the contact: Depends on the starting date. Generally, for one semester and potentially extendable.

Your position

Our research group - the prof, postdoc researchers and PhD students - is currently running multiple research projects. They are primarily related to energy policy analyses and property rent analyses (in the context of buildings' energy efficiency) and involve quantitative data analyses and writing reports.

We can make far better progress on our research with basic support from a motivated student like you on the following tasks:
  • Survey coding
  • Raw data pre-processing, basic data analysis, data visualization (using R ideally)
  • Conducting and summarizing basic information collection on our new research topic
  • Initial broad summary of the literature
  • Formatting our writing products (with our instructions)
  • Undertaking administrative tasks (E.g. document preparation with specific instructions)


Your profile

The assistantship will require:
  • Basic data analysis skills in R
  • Good writing and communication skills in English
  • Good writing and communication skills in German
  • Motivation to learn potential new research tools
  • Willingness to work in a team


The following skills are not strict prerequisite, but it would be a plus, if you are already familiar with some of them.
  • Stata
  • Mendeley (Literature organization application)
  • LaTeX
  • MS Office (Word, Excel, PPT)
  • Qualtrics (Survey software)


We are looking for a candidate:
  • within the University of Basel,
  • who already holds a bachelor's degree,
  • preferably with a background in Economics, Quantitative Social Sciences, or Psychology.
