Job Details

The School of Veterinary Science is part of the Faculty of Science and is located at UQ's Gatton campus. It offers innovative teaching and research to advance veterinary medicine for the health, care and wellbeing of animals, humans and the environment.

Since the first intake of students in 1936, the School has sustained a reputation for excellence in teaching and research across the veterinary disciplines. Its graduates are self-reliant, independent and highly capable veterinarians who possess the initiative and problem-solving abilities required for success in the veterinary industry.

UQ's five-year Bachelor of Veterinary Science (Honours) program is globally accredited by the Australasian Veterinary Boards Council, the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (UK) and the American Veterinary Medical Association. The School also contributes to programs in veterinary technology, and animal and veterinary bioscience.

UQ Gatton's teaching, research and hospital facilities exemplify the latest clinical technologies and evidence-based practices. With more than $140 million invested in purpose-built facilities, students and research staff access an integrated site for animal production, health and welfare teaching and research activities set on 1068 hectares of rural farmlands.

The Veterinary Teaching Hospital

The Veterinary Teaching Hospital is an organisational unit within the School. It is home to a range of outstanding clinical facilities and services, including:
  • UQ VETS Equine Specialist Hospital: this world-class, referral-only equine veterinary hospital provides advanced veterinary medical and surgical care for horses and offers a 24-hour emergency medical and surgical referral service.
  • UQ VETS Small Animal Hospital: offers the latest in veterinary medical and surgical diagnostic and treatment options for small animals, including wildlife and exotics.
  • UQ VETS Production Animal Service: provides routine and emergency mobile veterinary services to farms within a 70-kilometre radius of UQ's Gatton campus. The experienced and highly trained team care for beef and dairy cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, camels, poultry and alpaca.
  • UQ VETS Dayboro: offering care for small and large animals, this mixed practice is located 45 minutes north of Brisbane and services both commercial and hobby farmers.
  • UQ VETS Clinical Studies Centre: featuring a 16-table surgical teaching facility, this centre provides support to pre-clinical and clinical training in companion animals. It a respected research hub for clinical and behavioural research, and is used for veterinary continuing education events. It is also home to the School's Pets-for-Life Adoption Program.
  • UQ Veterinary Laboratory Services: provides an efficient pathology service to the hospitals and other clients through the School's core disciplines of clinical pathology, anatomical pathology, microbiology and parasitology. It also provides laboratory support for veterinary teaching and research.
  • Clinical placement supervision: School staff supervise placements at the RSPCA Brisbane Animal Care Campus in Wacol.
  • Student Clinical Skills Hub: allows veterinary science students to practice their manual and communication skills until they are confident and competent. It features a simulated client communications laboratory with static, online and interactive simulations, and low- and high-fidelity training models to facilitate development of fine motor skills (e.g. suturing), procedural techniques and cognitive/diagnostic competences.

About This Opportunity

The School of Veterinary Science at The University of Queensland invites applications for a clinical-track academic position in Small Animal Internal Medicine (SAIM) to be based at the UQ Veterinary Medical Centre Gatton see https://small-animal.hospital.uq.edu.au/ .

The VTH is equipped to offer outstanding patient care and works with a collaborative patient-focused team work approach. The SAIM service works closely with surgery, emergency/critical care, diagnostic imaging, anaesthesia and avian and exotic animal specialists. The SAIM service offers videoendoscopy (gastroduodendoscopy, bronchoscopy, cystoscopy), minimally-invasive procedures (stenting), laser treatment and continuous blood glucose monitoring and has access to advanced imaging technology including digital radiology, on-site 16-slice CT, off-site high field MRI and to a 24/7 fully staffed Intensive Care Unit with ventilatory support capabilities. The caseload offers a varied exposure to complex and challenging clinical cases to both students and clinicians.

This is a great opportunity to work in a world class facility providing clinical service and teaching in the area of Small Animal Internal Medicine. The successful candidate will work closely with two fellow ACVIM Diplomates to oversee the training of rotating small animal interns, a resident and veterinary undergraduates during their clinical rotations.

This position is located at The University of Queensland's picturesque Gatton Campus . Gatton Campus, UQ combines its Queensland Agricultural College heritage with modern research and teaching facilities in agriculture, agribusiness and veterinary science. Just over an hour's drive west of Brisbane and five kilometres from the local township, the 1068-hectare Gatton campus offers a relaxed, friendly atmosphere and world-class facilities including the Queensland Animal Science Precinct, the UQ Veterinary Medical Centre, Gatton Research Dairy, nursery and glasshouse facilities, the southern hemisphere's largest PV solar array research facility, and a pesticide wind tunnel facility. The campus also operates several commercial plant and animal production units in rural technologies to support teaching, research and hands-on training.

For US applicants, please note that Australian Universities use British terminology, as such a Lecturer (Level B) position is equivalent to that of an Assistant Professor position in the US.

This is a full-time, continuing position at Academic level B or C.

The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $95,771 - $135,276, plus super of up to 17%.
