The Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation (QAAFI) is a research institute of the University of Queensland (UQ) which was established in 2010 and comprises of three research centres - the Centre for Plant Science, the Centre for Animal Science, the Centre for Nutrition and Food Sciences.

QAAFI's team of 450 researchers, postgraduate students and support staff undertake high impact science for agriculture and food industries. The institute's strong partnership with the Queensland Government provides our researchers with a direct link to the agriculture industry in Queensland, and world class field research facilities throughout Queensland. Agriculture is one of UQ's highest ranked research fields nationally and internationally and QAAFI is a global leader in agricultural research in subtropical and tropical production systems.

QAAFI scientists are driven to make a difference to the agriculture and food industries and have over 150 collaborators worldwide.

The Centre for Horticultural Science (CHS) is part of the Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation, a partnership between UQ and the Queensland Government. QAAFI has established a new dedicated research centre for horticultural science to build upon the capacity of our world-class horticultural researchers and to develop Australia's global horticultural presence.

The award

The National Tree Genomics Program is an $11.4M collaborative program among Australian and international universities and industries, and Horticulture Innovation Australia. The Phenotype Prediction Toolbox (led by Dr Craig Hardner) is one of three 5 year projects within the National Tree Genomics Program and develops resources to translate genomic technologies for improvement of Australia horticultural tree crops. The University of Queensland offers 1 preferential PhD scholarship for projects aligned to the Phenotype Prediction Toolbox. Interest from potential honours students is also invited.

Potential projects that may be supported with this scholarship include:
  1. genomic prediction models for priority traits (including vigour, phenology, precocity, fruit quality) in mango and macadamia,
  2. genome based methods to fast track rootstock breeding in avocado for resistance to phytophthora and control of scion vigour and precocity,
  3. validation and extension of genomic based prediction in citrus
  4. genomic prediction at a global scale to improve breeding and deployment,

Candidates are encouraged to discuss potential projects with Dr Hardner (see below for contact details). The successful candidate will develop skills in big data management, genomics, genetics, statistics, bioinformatics, and translation to applied genetic improvement and will work with international partners in mainland US and Hawaii, European Union, and China.

It is expected the successful applicant will begin Research Quarter 1 2020, or within 2 weeks of 1st January 2020.

Selection criteria

Applications are invited from outstanding and enthusiastic domestic or international graduates with background in, or ability to learn, quantitative genetics and /or statistics, plant (preferably tree) biology, and bioinformatics. Applicants should possess a First Class Honours Degree, Masters Research Degree or equivalent, with at least one peer reviewed publication.

Remuneration

The 2019 Research Training Program (RTP) living allowance stipend rate is AUD$27,596 per annum (indexed annually), which is tax-free for three years with two possible extensions of up to 6 months each in approved circumstances ( conditions apply ).
