Job Purpose

We are seeking to appoint a new senior member of staff to join this successful programme at an exciting time when the MB ChB curriculum and programme structure are under review. The new appointee will join a well-established team of academics to contribute to the development of the revised curriculum. This Senior Lecturer role is designed for an experienced educator with an established track record in curriculum design and implementation and an interest in digital education to continue to innovate and deliver a first class education for future doctors. The applicant will contribute to the Programme Review and will then be expected to contribute to curriculum development and module leadership as well as to deliver core teaching requirements: facilitating learning sessions, teaching clinical methods, delivering seminars and lectures, and where appropriate writing and delivering assessments. The successful candidate will work closely with the Director of the MB ChB and will contribute to line management responsibilities and personal development of other members of staff.

This role will focus on the development of the curriculum, including the use of digital education within the MBChB, to enable students to demonstrate that they can meet the GMC's 2018 Outcomes for Graduates, preparation of the Birmingham Medical School and its medical students for the national Medical Licensing Assessment and to ensure graduates are able to make the transition to the Foundation Programme in the NHS with confidence.
Depending on the discipline of the individual it is expected that they would also contribute to teaching across the College of Medical and Dental Science's undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

Main duties

• To contribute to the development of the new curriculum, working with staff in the College of Medical and Dental Sciences and with colleagues in our Local Education Partnerships Trusts and General Practices
• Strategic leadership and operational management of agreed areas of the undergraduate medical curriculum
• Work with academic and clinical colleagues to enable them to use their knowledge to design effective learning for students, including the use of digital technologies
• To collaborate with colleagues across the College of Medical and Dental Sciences to develop inter-professional activities for students
• Ensure that Birmingham Medical School and its students are prepared for the introduction of the UK Medical Licensing Assessment

• To be a member of the MB ChB Curriculum Development Committee
• To work effectively with academics, Professional Services colleagues and other members of the MBChB team
• Monitor, maintain and enhance the standards of education in the programme
• To undertake research in medical education that supports the development of Birmingham Medical School curricula
• To develop research objectives and proposals for their own or joint research in medical education
• To conduct and publish individual and collaborative research projects, present work at relevant conferences, contribute to national debate in medical education
• To participate in teaching, writing and marking assessments, supervision of student projects within the MBChB and other College of Medical and Dental Sciences programmes when appropriate
• To act as a personal academic tutor to medical students
• To undertake other ad-hoc duties as defined by the Head of the Birmingham Medical School
• To have the ability to engage the interest and enthusiasm of students and inspire them to learn
• If the post holder were to be a medical clinician s/he will be required to work flexibly to balance academic and clinical commitments

Person Specification

• Normally, a higher Degree relevant to the discipline area (usually PhD) or equivalent qualifications
• Evidence of expertise in medical education including implementation of new activity to a programme of study or equivalent
• Ability to encourage the use of a wide range of educational methods by academic and clinical staff
• Extensive teaching experience and scholarship
• PGCE in Higher Education teaching or equivalent
• Fellowship (or higher) of Advance HE
• Proven ability to devise, advise on and manage learning.
• Skills in managing, motivating and mentoring others successfully at all levels.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a team.

Learning and teaching requirements
• An excellent teaching profile and performance in terms of both impact and quality.
• Teaching quality demonstrably informed by an appropriate level of scholarship.
• Evidence of success under the following headings.
• Reputation for the development of teaching and learning excellence within the discipline
• Successful and sustained use of a range of appropriate teaching methods, and assessment strategies that promote high quality learning, including learning that is flexible, distinctive and current and stimulates learners' natural curiosity.
• Significant and sustained contribution to one or more of the following: strategic development of new programmes, approaches to learning, the development of learning resources.
• High quality and sustained contributions to fostering excellence in teaching activities more widely.
• Mentoring and expert advice which develops the skills of colleagues in teaching and in fostering learning

• Demonstrates significant achievement in management and administration-related activities, which will include leadership of activities/initiatives. Evidence of success
