The School of Agriculture and Food Sciences is one of the largest Schools of this type in Australia, comprising research and teaching experts in plant and soil science, animal science, agricultural business, environmental science and food, nutrition and technology. Plant Sciences in the School of Agriculture and Food Sciences are a highly productive research group with a strong track record of linkage to Australian agricultural industries, and of involvement in agricultural research for development in the Asia-Pacific region. The spectrum of research involvement of the group staff spans from fundamental discovery science, through to the delivery of pragmatic solutions to industry problems. This appointment is to enhance the group's capacity to optimize crop productivity and quality in the context of our changing agricultural and environmental setting. This position is based at the St Lucia campus, but the associated teaching and research activities extend to the Gatton campus (and beyond).

Animal and Wildlife Sciences, within the School of Agriculture and Food Sciences, is a broad discipline area including nutrition, reproduction, breeding and genetics, management and production, and health and welfare. The Animal and Wildlife Sciences Group is a strong, dynamic, and research-orientated group, with direct linkages to State and Federal Government, and industry funding agencies. The University is a member of the Poultry and the Pork CRCs and has recently spent some $40 million on state-of-the-art animal research facilities on the Gatton campus. The Animal and Wildlife Sciences Group works with ruminant (beef and dairy cattle, sheep and goats) and non-ruminant (poultry and pigs) production animals, horses, and wildlife species. Major research activities of the Group cover nutritional physiology and metabolism, reproduction and application of advanced reproductive technologies, and the science and sustainable management of animals in different agricultural and natural systems. Research of the group supports Australian animal industries, and animal production systems in the developing world through the support of international funding agencies. The Animal and Wildlife Sciences Group is responsible for teaching undergraduate Animal Science courses into Science, Agricultural Science, Sustainable Agriculture, Equine Science, Wildlife Science, Veterinary Technology, and Veterinary Science degrees.

About This Opportunity

The Technical Officer provides support for teaching and research in animal science. The position is responsible for supervision of facilities used by the Animal Science group as well as supporting practical classes in animal biology, molecular biology and related courses. The role supports, maintains and operates laboratory and field equipment, and provides induction and training as required. Although a member of the Animal Science technical team, the role may be required to support teaching and research in other discipline areas. This role is based at the Gatton Campus and reports to the Technical Services Coordinator.

This position is located at The University of Queensland's picturesque Gatton Campus . Gatton Campus, UQ combines its Queensland Agricultural College heritage with modern research and teaching facilities in agriculture, agribusiness and veterinary science. Just over an hour's drive west of Brisbane and five kilometres from the local township, the 1068-hectare Gatton campus offers a relaxed, friendly atmosphere and world-class facilities including the Queensland Animal Science Precinct, the UQ Veterinary Medical Centre, Gatton Research Dairy, nursery and glasshouse facilities, the southern hemisphere's largest PV solar array research facility, and a pesticide wind tunnel facility. The campus also operates several commercial plant and animal production units in rural technologies to support teaching, research and hands-on training.

Our Ideal Candidate

Applicants should possess a Bachelor degree in animal science or related disciplines, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education and training. In addition you should have relevant lab experience which includes supporting the research of undergraduate and postgraduate students. You should also have a demonstrated understanding of animal physiology and anatomy and associated experience in large and small animal handling.

What We Can Offer

This is a full-time, continuing position at HEW level 5.

The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $67,608 - $75,506, plus super of up to 17% and recreation leave loading of 17.5%.
