Location: University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham, UK

Full time Clinical Academic Salary is normally in the range of £32,569 to £56,394.

Full Time, Fixed Term Contract for up to 12 months

Due to the nature of the work undertaken in this role all successful applicants will be subject to a satisfactory Occupational Health clearance prior to appointment.

Summary of Role
  • To contribute to the achievement of the Institute's research strategy by undertaking specified research activities within an established research programme.
  • Clinical research training fellowship award by The Centre of Membrane Proteins and Receptors (COMPARE) to enhance the translational activities in the Centre.
  • To generate data to enable the applicant to apply for a fellowship to study for a PhD


Main Duties / Responsibilities
  • To plan and develop research contributions to subject area using methodologies, critical evaluations, interpretations, analyses and other appropriate techniques.
  • To contribute to writing bids for research grants
  • To suggest and contribute to the development of research techniques, models and methods in collaboration with colleagues
  • To disseminate research findings using appropriate and effective media such as publication, research seminars etc
  • To analyse and interpret the results of own research and generate ideas based on outcomes.
  • To provide guidance to other staff and students on own specialist area
  • To contribute to the production of research reports and publications
  • To prepare papers for Steering groups and other bodies
  • Laboratory research, in vitro/in vivo cell work, animal studies
  • Epidemiology
  • Exposure to small molecule development and advanced microscopy, correlation of clinical data with laboratory findings
  • Participation in in-house and external research training courses
  • Plan for the use of research resources as appropriate
  • Contribute to the planning of research projects
  • Co-ordinate own work with others to avoid conflict or duplication of effort
  • Develop research skills and scientific knowledge as part of this research fellowship with a view to becoming an independent researcher and decision maker within the group ss
  • Liaise with research staff and support staff on routine matters
  • Presentation of results at local, national and international meetings
  • Strengthen existing and forging new collaborative relationships with research groups at a local, national and international level


Person Specification
  • Primary EU medical degree e.g. MBChB
  • Completed Foundation Years 1 and 2 or involved in specialty training programme relating to the area of specialism undergoing PhD
  • Possesses sufficient breadth and depth of specialist knowledge in the discipline and or research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes
  • Completion of an online course for Good Clinical Practice and full registration with General Medical Council.
