Job Details

Cardiff University

Our Darlithwyr Disglair development scheme for early career academics is a bespoke programme of innovative leadership training, peer-to-peer support and networking opportunities.

It is designed to support early career academics wishing to pursue lecturer roles by giving them the opportunity to experience life as a full time university lecturer for 18 months, and to develop their leadership skills in teaching and research supported by an innovative training programme.

Benefits

Our bespoke training and development programme provides a range of leadership development opportunities. Combined with direct teaching and research experience, this approach will increase your competitiveness for future academic roles, as well as for other careers where teaching and research skills are valued and needed.

The scheme fills a gap identified by many early career academics, supporting the transition from research-only careers to those involving a balance between teaching and research.

Alongside tailored workshop days, the programme will provide each Darlithydd Disglair (Brilliant Lecturer) with a near-peer mentor (a Cardiff University lecturer with three to five years more experience) who will offer support to develop your academic career.

There will also be opportunities to network with other early career academics in the Cardiff city-region to create a supportive community of practice across institutions.

A personal research and development fund of £3,000 will be made available to each Darlithydd Disglair (Brilliant Lecturer), in addition to support provided in academic Schools.

The School

The Welsh School of Architecture has a reputation of being one of the best schools in the UK. Its holistic approach to design embraces all aspects of architecture.

The School is recognised internationally for its research. All academic staff are engaged in research and scholarship activities, which means that they are at the forefront of their subject specialism. The School has the most advanced research facilities and computer modelling capabilities available, through which a range of design tools are developed. Research informs teaching across the curriculum.

Research in the School is actioned through a number of research centres:

The Centre for Research in the Built Environment (CRiBE) specifically focuses on the field of sustainable built environment and is currently supporting the Welsh Assembly Government's initiative for a low carbon built environment in Wales.

The BRE (Building Research Establishment) Centre for Sustainable Design of the Built Environment (SuDOBE) is a partnership between the School and the UK's largest built environment research organisation.

PRASADA (Practice, Research and Advancement in South Asian Studies) is a group of researchers in the UK and India specialising in the rich architectural and cultural heritage of that continent.

The Design Research Unit Wales (DRU-w), based within the School, is where design and research come together to produce innovative sustainable buildings. Real design projects are carried out in partnership with practice, producing award-winning buildings of national importance.

The School also leads the Wales Low Carbon Research Institute (LCRI) which is a consortium of six universities in Wales carrying out cross-disciplinary research aimed at reducing carbon dioxide emissions and providing clean energy sources.

The Role

The Welsh School of Architecture invites applications for a Lectureship in Architectural Heritage and Conservation or in Architectural History and Theory. Applicants should have a record of or potential to produce research that reaches the highest standards of excellence in terms of originality, significance and rigour either of these areas. The successful candidate will be expected to deliver high-quality teaching and to supervise MSc dissertations. They will join one of the School's Research and Scholarship Groups and take an active role in the Undergraduate or Postgraduate teaching provision.

This post is full-time (35 hours per week), fixed term for 18 months.

Salary: £33,199 - £39,609 per annum (Grade 6)
