Job Details

Cardiff University

Our Darlithwyr Disglair development scheme for early career academics is a bespoke programme of innovative leadership training, peer-to-peer support and networking opportunities.

It is designed to support early career academics wishing to pursue lecturer roles by giving them the opportunity to experience life as a full time university lecturer for 18 months, and to develop their leadership skills in teaching and research supported by an innovative training programme.

Benefits

Our bespoke training and development programme provides a range of leadership development opportunities. Combined with direct teaching and research experience, this approach will increase your competitiveness for future academic roles, as well as for other careers where teaching and research skills are valued and needed.

The scheme fills a gap identified by many early career academics, supporting the transition from research-only careers to those involving a balance between teaching and research.

Alongside tailored workshop days, the programme will provide each Darlithydd Disglair (Brilliant Lecturer) with a near-peer mentor (a Cardiff University lecturer with three to five years more experience) who will offer support to develop your academic career.

There will also be opportunities to network with other early career academics in the Cardiff city-region to create a supportive community of practice across institutions.

A personal research and development fund of £3,000 will be made available to each Darlithydd Disglair (Brilliant Lecturer), in addition to support provided in academic Schools.

The School

The School of English, Communication and Philosophy is a multi-discipline School that values critical rigour, creative thinking, and intellectual inquisitiveness.

We think across disciplines; are committed both to our location of culture and to internationalism; and ensure that our graduates are equipped for the world of work.

In each of our research areas we combine traditional scholarship with a record of innovative work. In the latest nationwide assessment of University research quality, we were ranked 10th for English Language and Literature (which includes Creative Writing). In the same exercise, our Philosophy department was ranked 4th in the UK for research impact.
We celebrate ideas and conceptual strength, believing that high quality research in our disciplines can, in meaningful ways, enhance the world.

The Role

We are seeking to appoint an Early Career Academic with expertise in Corpus Linguistics and Lexical Grammar. The successful candidate will be expected to deliver teaching at both Undergraduate and Masters level, and have an emerging research profile, including publications of a quality commensurate with submission to REF2021.

This post may be offered either part-time or full-time (35 hours per week), fixed term for 18 months.

Salary: £33,199 - £39,609 per annum, pro rata if applicable (Grade 6)
